Being a Senior and all, I volunteered to be part of the team that helps out at the Freshmen Orientation in August. We've had a couple meetings so far and at this point we're just thinking of different activities for them, especially ones that'll act as icebreakers/get-to-know-each-other type things.
All the ones suggested so far are old and kinda boring, and I wanna come up with something better. The whole idea behind my activity would be that it wouldn't seem like one. It would seem like something went wrong or whatever, and the Freshmen would have to work together to do something. It's kinda hard to explain, but I hope you get my point. I haven't been able to come up with anything solid, and am wondering if you guys could help. Thanks in advance.

Lock them in a room and tell them to get to know each other or you wont let them out.

Oldie but a goodie.
Seriously why don't you just have some little party like thing for them to go to or something. Let hang out for a bit and have fun, you'll accomplish what you need to. It really sounds like you guys are making this harder than it really is.

Well that's pretty much what the whole thing is. They come in, sit around and talk for a bit, play a few games, listen to talks from a buncha people, eat, watch a movie, go to bed. But I want one of games to be...covertish. Kinda like a prank you'd see on Scare Tactics or something.

Make sure you have plenty of food and drinks. That's one of the bare essentials.
Hmmm, I guess you can do it like a Splinter-Cell thing. One team acting as the splinter-cells which the mission of pulling pranks on the other teams.
Put in penalties for the failed attempts on the cells' side.

Have someone dress up as the cotton monster.
Or make a 100 foot pillar wide enough to stand on, with 8 little black orbs on the sides, if you break one you get a weapon, but the pillar starts to tilt, the more you break, the less stable th epillar is, only one person can walk away from it, so whoever survives wins....
<.<
Hmm, maybe have a lock down, like an announcement that some seriel killer has been spotted in the area. You know, fear and stuff brings peeps together.

If a 'serial killer' is there, have them practice the safety procedures, or have them evacuate to the nearest burger king for more food and whatnot..? <_<
Sorry, just throwing something out there.

I think you're (the group) missing the point of the ice breaker games.
It's not to terrorize them with scare tactics and what not. They'll already be scared enough, most of them anyway. The point is for them to get to know each other, maybe embarrass themselves in an acceptable degree just a little bit, and let them form bonds on their own that way. Rather than forcing it.
They're going to have awkward silences, most of them won't know each other. Just like us. But the games we played worked for everyone for the most part. And that was in the old manner before Mr. Saint revamped the system. Now Mr. Long has it, and I do believe it's gotten better than our freshman retreat.
I've been sick the past few meetings. I've got the thrush. (Normal Oropharyngeal Algae.) So I've been unable to make it to the meetings. I've also had class, being as math is not my strong point. And I'll admit to that.
So I wouldn't suggest anything meant to scare or humiliate them. That would accomplish the opposite of what we hope for.

You taking it the wrong way. It doesn't have to scare or humiliate them. I just want something that isn't so obvious. Like "Oh here we're playing this game so you get to know each other." That's what seems forced to me. Like I said before, it's hard for me to explain.

Like the game we played our freshmen retreat.
We stood in a circle. And we had to pick someone random, and say to them.
"Baby; I love you, would you please please smile?"
And if you laughed while saying that, you had to try someone else.
If they laughed saying the response, then they had to try to get someone to laugh.
Response = "Baby, I love you, but I just can't smile."
-Reminds everyone it's a guy's school. So it was very hilarious.-
