I understand the theory behind turnitin, and before anything else, I've got to say I'm in support of that. But, quite frankly, it just doesn't work. Not only is it a huge hassle having to upload papers all the time, but it's extremely difficult avoiding using someone else's exact words, especially if it's unintentional. Well-known phrases? Plagiarism. Three words in a row that match someone else's? Plagiarism. Even in-text citations! Plagiarism!

Agree? Disagree? Opinions? Discuss!

Turnitin is basically a site-thing for teachers to scan and send in students' paper to see if they plagiarised from another site. Completely unreliable though. (...>>... I'm not even halfway done with homework yet, so I'll check again after I finish.)

I agree, and it becomes annoying at times. My school uses this system, and although it's a great idea, it is far too specific. We had 21 out of 26 students in my class got admin detentions and a 0% on a report about Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, due to the fact that this system is ridiculous. For one reason or another, phrases such as "viciously attacked" and "wealthy businessman" turned up as "plagerism". Apparently, they were "direct quotes" from sparknotes according to our teacher. I was one of the lucky five that did not get a detention, but I still find it completely unfair that such minor quotes are considered plagarism worthy of discipline. There were people who hadn't even looked at sparknotes who recieved detentions. Just seems way over the top to me...

While its admirable to check for plagarism, admittedly, it really is an incessant hassle.. I'd have to agree a little with both sides.. (I realize this doesn't help you, btw... ).

Phishy: My college uses it as well, however, its completely optional for Teachers to use it. In the end, I've only used it twice this year, thats with 4 classes, and dozens of papers.
