Emily, honestly, for the first time in history, didn't exactly listen to the teacher's speech and orientation. For once, she was in a trance that had her eyes fixed to those materials, basically searching for stuff that she anticipated to use. After all, these were limited; not every one of them would be able to get the same stuff, or at least not without one having less-than-desirable quality.
Despite this though, I suppose Miss Glass should rest assured that her class wouldn't exactly be in pieces---
"Fun, ne?" Emily's sister said, disturbing the white-haired girl's thoughts. Emily blinked and looked at her sister before she broke into a nervous laugh; nothing too obnoxious, but something that made it quite obvious how much attention she wasn't giving at all.
"Y-yeah, Fun. ...Yeah."

Well that made sense. That however, brought up an interesting thought. Regardless of power, Ryu had a hard time believing that the school would allow a transfer to become part of the pillar system. It had been something that was more or less shunned at his last school. Mugen Hall had been extremely against transfer students, to the point of almost constant violence against them. You could have destroyed every one of the pillars and captains in every one of the schools of the collective, and the teachers would have handed the titles back out to the natives. That was besides the point now, though. Though obviously he'd become a pillar for a short time, now it seemed that if he put Matrim in his place, that he would become the school captain. Not that he gave a shit about the position, let alone the responsibilities of it.
His brow twitched at the teachers mannerisms. Two minutes and she was already annoying. Fuck. Unlike others, Ryu didn't bother sketching shit. He didn't like art, so why bother doing anything that didn't need to be done? He did however open his backpack and pull out an entirely empty art book and a pencil. Sitting them down in front of him, he scanned the rest of the class, then turned back to the front, leaning back in his seat.
Ryu just wanted to get this damned class over with so that he didn't have to come back. He didn't voice it, however. The more she bullshitted now, the less work they'd have to do before the bell rang.

Having received some sort of reaction from each of them, she nodded vaguely before continuing. " I'll go ahead and state the obvious by pointing out that four of the tables have supplies on them. Pick a partner, pick a table, and get to work. The theme should be listed on your table." she directed them, clapping her hands together a bit brusquely. Then her eyes narrowed. " Can't play nice with the other kids and don't want a partner? Too frickin' bad. I mentioned on my notice that you'd have to have some sort of teamwork capacity." A smile sprang onto her face as she nodded towards the students. " Once you've planned out whatever it is you want to draw, feel free to listen to your music." She eyed each student warily. Drea and Emily probably wouldn't give her any problems. They'd had a rather nice poem from Creative Writing 001 and she knew they'd be well-behaved. Gilgamesh, too, would likely behave. But the others... Well, if problems arose, she'd deal with them then. " If you have any questions, come ask me. I'll be grading some papers from a prior class, so don't worry about disturbing me." With that said, she headed back for her desk, mentally wincing as she considered the sheer number of papers to be graded. At this point, posting order doesn't matter (if it ever did) and nor does the number of times you post. I'll be looking at effort, originality, and the capability your character has to stay true to their character and still manage the assignment. The time limit is a little over two weeks. Have everything completed by January 3rd, a Sunday.
The new deadline for informing me of your partnerships is January 10, 2010.
One person in each pair should PM me and I'll assign a theme. Also, PM me if you finish before the finish date. Effort, after all, is one of the points I'm looking at.
If there will be issues resulting from this particular string of demands, PM me.
I will update the following as the information is received.Table | Pair | Theme | 1 | Emily & Drea | Art v. Literature | 2 | Ryu & Gilgamesh | Good v. Evil | 3 | Quan & Cain | Life v. Death | 4 | N/A & N/A | Peace v. War |

Gilgamesh shrugged.. Partners meh..
Gilgamesh got up and looked at Ryu and sat in front of him..
"Wanna pair up?" Gilgamesh said with a smile on his face..
If he didn't then he might pick someone else.. but who? who would pair up with Gilgamesh? This would be an interesting class..
He sighed and looked around. people getting together.. this might turn out to being a good class.

Looking confused for effect Quan frowned. Partners? That was no good. Quan didn't really want to work with any one because he didn't really want get involved in this school. He just wanted to keep a low profile and not get on anyone's good or bad side, but mainly bad side. That meant he didn't really want to get to know anyone. It would just make things harder, more complicated. No need to make any ties with anyone. If they made the connections that was there prerogative but it didn't mean that he would. He could keep relationships at a arms length and so he did. It made it easier when they died. And it would happen. It was inevitable.
When she decided that they needed to move to the tables Quan was among the first to get up. No this wasn't out of enthusiasm but just to pick out a spot. He figured if he could pick out a spot quickly and start babbling in mandarin then maybe he would be able to dissuade this whole "you need to join a group" thing. So he got up and walked over to a table. He sat down and looked at the theme. "Life & Death". Seemed interesting enough. Maybe if he had to draw this would be something kinda cool. Just draw some skulls crossbones, you know. That and look real confused with a sincere but misunderstanding smile on his face. Hell, it had worked before.
As he sat down he spoke to himself, "Huì tú? Zhè jiù shì zhè běn shì ba?/Drawing? That's what this is huh?"
Just in case anyone else happened to know mandarin, he could fake his not knowing english...

As he waited for a reply from the girl, the teacher then continued on with the lesson, forcing Cain's attention away from Tara. The blue-haired Junior took in every single one of the teacher's words, not because he was a teacher's pet, no. He just wanted to get by this class smoothly and not have to go through time-consuming things like retests and the likes. At that, the instructions were laid out to them, one of the tables she was referring to being the one that Cain was already sitting at. Well, that was easy. Guess all that was needed out of him now was to get a partner. He sighed, looking around for a moment. At that moment, there were only three who were at close proximity to him. Matrim, who seemed busy with conversations on his own; the girl, though she too seemed distracted; and finally, Quan, the Chinese guy to his left.
There were four themes, it seemed, and Cain turned his attention to the list pasted upon his table. The rest of her words were pretty much reminders of what the lesson would be, and how to behave in her class, information that Cain no longer required. Well, now that that was done, he might as well start getting to work now. First thing's first, he needed a partner. He turned his eyes to Quan once more, before raising his right hand, passing him a soft wave.
"Hey, uhm, do you speak English? If so... You wanna partner up?"
If Quan looked up at him, he would probably notice Cain's other hand upon the table, which was clenched, save the index finger. It was pointing at the list of themes on the table, or to be more precise, the debatable theme of "Live VS. Death". It seemed to be the easiest among them. After all, there were many ways to represent either topics, and considering their great contrast, it would be easy to compare them too. That is, of course, if his Chinese partner agreed.

A partner?
It was a little troublesome for the girl, all considering that she wasn't exactly used to collaborations. Though she had several assistants back in the day, Emily was still more comfortable on her own. Oh well, there wasn't anything else she could do about it. She turned to her sister with a smile. "Mind helping me out?" She said, "I need a good writer with me for what I have in mind..."
Emily chuckled, basically standing and walking towards the materials, taking some watercolour pencils, watercolours, brushes of all sorts and some palletes, calligraphy pens and pencils...
Emily placed the materials by their table, arranging them neatly. Of course, anyone could borrow some stuff, it was just that Emily was ecstatic about being able to draw again, no matter how much she would deny it.
"... Water, water..." She mumbled to herself, looking for some cups to put water in, then some paper and old newspapers. Some glue too...
"Masking fluid... white acrylic..." Emily continued on, still quite engrossed. Just how would Drea take this?

Quan sat thinking. On a few things actually. How exactly he was going to get to do this work without "Knowing" english and also how he was going to draw this. He had a few ideas in mind. Something about the people on the streets struggling for life, cheating death. Maybe pickpocketing him? But stealing what? What did you steal from death? Life? No the bastard only took it. What did he hold then? Time? Yeah that might work. Something about stealing time from death and crawling away maybe. Seemed simple enough.
Until something happened then he decided to continue on doodling randomly. He did this until some other student waved an spoke to him.
"Hey, uhm, do you speak English? If so... You wanna partner up?"
"Wǒ bù shuō yīngwe2n," Quan said apologetically. He had to play his cover right? To get that easy A. But there was no reason that this kid couldn't pull off that A either, working with him. Like maybe the whole language thing would land him grace too or something. After Quan spoke he shot a wink at Cain that only he'd be able to see as everyone else was working on something or other, academic or not, and the teacher was behind him. While he was at it and no one was paying attention or could see he mouthed 'Easy A' in a confused frown to stay as if he didn't know the language but mouthing possible intent.
He hoped the kid would get the hint...

Ms. Glass nodded to herself when she saw Emily and Drea working together. They always did well. She was amused when she saw that the table and theme they'd ended up with was that of literature and art. They'd do well with such a thing, especially considering that they'd both gained passing marks in her class.
Then, seeing one of the more rail-thin students speaking in Mandarin with a rather apologetic look on his face, she frowned. She'd gotten to her feet, moving around to oversee the partnerships. Just in time to see him mouthing something to the other boy.
While she had no idea what he was trying to say, the look in his eyes was far too suspicious to assume he was doing something with good will. And she could guess at what he was trying to do from his words.
"恐怕我也不会落入这个," she said, scolding him. I'm afraid I won't fall for that, she'd said. "您需要做的工作,我们每个人一样。这是不公平的获得由假装你不会讲英语的工作了。" You'll have to do the work, just like everyone else. It's not fair to get out of working by pretending you don't speak English.
She had no doubt in her mind that he did, in fact, speak English. And that shrewd look in his face told her that he knew exactly what he was doing. She'd have none of that in her class!
Then, she switched back to English for Cain's benefit. "You two will be working together, then. Life versus death. I expect to see some good results by the end of class."
She clapped her hands together cheerfully before moving about again. If someone needed her, she was sure they'd call on her.

And much to Cain's disappointment, the man replied to him in a language Cain could only guess to be Mandarin. Oh great, this was going to be quite hard indeed. He let out a soft sigh, almost succumbing to the inevitable then. Of course, he would try to comfort himself and it was kinda easy. Unlike conversations, there were things that were not restricted by the language barrier. One, would be art. Art was a universal language. Maybe he could use that to communicate with the man? Wait a minute, did he just say something? Did he just mouth to him 'Easy A'? And with a wink too? Cain looked at him for a moment, baffled, until he realised what he was trying to pull off. Cain's eyes widened, for he knew that the teacher was already on them. Of course, he had failed to stop Quan, for he had no idea then what he was trying to do.
The teacher then spoke to Quan in Mandarin too, surprising Cain. This teacher was pretty amazing, it seemed. Cain knew not how she learned how to speak a foreign language. Cain doubted she had been taught by 259, for he knew that the education system cared little about such trivial things. All they wanted was to produce independent workers from whom they could reap benefits from. In the end, it was still a selfish run. From the tone the teacher was using, however, Cain could tell that it was far from a compliment or a reassurance.
"You two will be working together, then. Life versus death. I expect to see some good results by the end of class."
Cain looked at the teacher, welcoming the English instructions with a small smile, nodding his head as he acknowledged them. Well, looks like they would still have to do it the old way. Sneaky Quan. Cain had been worried there that he too would be put in trouble, for associating with Quan, but it seemed that they had both been second-chanced here. Might as well not waste it.
"Well, I guess we still have to do this the fair way. So, life VS death... Perhaps we could illustrate a situation where one would be in the center of life vs death? Or maybe the sweet temptations that come from both sides? Or the two sides doing their best to pull people to their ends? We pretty much have a lot of choices here."

"Mind helping me out? I need a good writer with me for what I have in mind..." Drea flushed with pride at her sister's compliment. She was pleased that Emily thought she was a good writer. Then, she watched as her sister moved towards one of the tables, pulling the materials she needed.
She blinked as she looked at what her sister pulled. The sheer variety told her that her sister was likely more advanced as an artist than Drea was as a writer.
"... Water, water..." Emily mumbled to herself. Without a word, Drea moved towards one of the few sinks that were in most art rooms and filled a plastic cup - there was a pile beside the sink itself.
When she returned, it seemed as though Emily had gathered what she needed. Drea... was starting to get suspicious. These materials looked suspiciously like the things a certain type of artist would need...
She then noticed the theme at the table they'd settled in at.
Delighted, she spoke up, "Art and literature? Perfect for us, ne, Emily?"

Ms. Glass's eyebrows drew together in a frown as she looked at the last pair - two students that had yet to actively participate in her class. It really was too bad, but she had more than warned the would-be students before they'd even signed up that it was a partner-based and work-relevant class.
If they didn't want to work, they didn't have to work. She certainly wouldn't force them to do so.
"Mr. Gallagher," she called out, "And Ms. Ritter. You are excused from my class. Please do not return until you've decided to work."
She turned her back towards them, facing the other six students in her class. They were all partnered up - which she was pleased with - and were, in some way or another, working to figure out how they wanted to work on their themes. Well, two of the partners were. She was unsure what was going on with one of them, but decided to leave it to them to figure out.
"You have until the end of class," she said warmly. "Get cracking."
Deadline for finished work: January 31st, exactly two weeks. I look forward to seeing some good results. Please remember - experience is based on creativity and effort.
