"I'm not sure I can teach you mandarin. I'm illiterate and its a tonal language, something that is generally very difficult for people who have never had any experience in them. That and the sounds are fairly different then what we're using."
Though she was disappointed, she didn't show it, simply inclining her head to acknowledge his words. "That's fine. I'll find another source for it, then," she said, before moving on to answer his next questions, if a bit vaguely.
"I guess it's not your lifestyle so much as it is the different elements within it," she said. She paused for a moment, before nodding to herself and continuing. "And I can't really explain. It's partially curiosity, but it's also partially necessity. I can't really explain beyond that."
And she meant 'can't'. She had no idea how she could explain to him that she wanted to know about the different sorts of crimes and walks of life and how she could use them in her stories and roles and all of the things that she would be doing in the future. She fully intended to experience life, and she needed to start now...
And, of course, there was that. That which she couldn't share, but might one day have to... But that day wasn't today, and certainly not with a stranger, no matter how honor bound he might be.

"That's fine. I'll find another source for it, then,"
"Duibuqi,"Quan said apologizing, "But if you ever need some one to talk to in mandarin I can do that."
She then explained or somewhat gave an answer as to why she wanted to learn about his lifestyle. His interest piqued. Curiosity and a need to know? That in of itself was an answer that would have an interesting story. Unfortunately that was all she said to him. And it was all that she meant to say to him for some reason or another. If she wasn't going to explain anymore then Quan wasn't going to push it. If she wanted to know that was part of his lifestyle. You don't ask questions out of curiosity and if you do never touch on something that was specifically mentioned as unmentionable. If you did that you were significantly shortening your lifespan.
Actually a second thought on that caused Quan to laugh. After a moment he grinned, "There's your first lesson," He chuckled again, "Free of charge."
He briefly thought about elaborating on it right on the spot but he decided against it. Why? Because he was in the mood for a joke. Yeah, it might be a little lame but he saw good fun in giving her her first "lesson" without really explaining anything. That and he could always pull another joke tag teaming off this one. Pulling that there was another lesson in "disguise". Perception, seeing underneath, pick up the meanings quickly. But yeah, this wasn't really a true lesson he figured, he just wanted to have a little fun...
