"Excellent."
He turned and began to leave, waving her to follow him deeper in to the building. He seemed to be completely at ease and not at all bothered by their spat. At least not in the same way she was. He was used to people not liking him.
"How is Maddie doing? Has she outgrown the unicorn yet?"
He asked, switching to what was a friendly topic. At least in his mind.

A moment of hesitance followed his gesture before Olesya followed him deeper into the building. Normally she didn't go this far back. She only came in to give her reports and get her orders, most of her work happening outside the city walls. She liked it better that way, she didn't want to get involved in the nitty gritty logistics of the army, she wanted to be useful then go home at the end of the day to Maddie and David. Speaking of Maddie...
"She's doing great, better than she's ever been. She has her own room, a pseudo-family, she's even going to school and has friends with the other children here."
It was kind of strange how easily she fell into the pseudo-family role. It was unconventional at best, her, Maddie, and David. She and David were...complicated. They both acted like parental figures to the young girl, and there were plenty of instances of coulda-woulda-shoulda, but nothing ever solidly established.
"She still has the unicorn, it's one of her favorite toys. She still asks about you sometimes."

"She is a sweet girl. I like her. Maybe when Bastille is a bit healthier she can come and visit the girls. I imagine she has never seen a baby?"
Maybe she had, he didn't know. He smiled thinking about Maddie though, he liked kids. And animals. They didn't suck yet. And if you knew how to handle them they would do what you wanted them too.
Mathew had his own family, and pseudo family, thanks to his apprentices. And all of the Leon clones. And Leon. He really did play Daddy to a lot of people on reflection.
"We moved our house to God territory to take advantage of their better medical facilities for the births."
Which is why he had been gone recently.

Bastille...that name was incredibly familiar. With her memory being as fuzzy as it was, she couldn't rightly remember where she'd heard it before. Perhaps it had been a classmate? As Varsity Captain, Olesya had met and befriended a lot of the student body, but she couldn't remember half their names if her life depended on it.
"Wait, what?"
None of what he said computed. Bastille. Baby. We. Births? Olesya had only been gone for three months! What had Mathew been up to?!

"My Fiance, she gave birth to twins a couple of weeks ago. I'm surprised you hadn't heard. I thought it was big news, the God's held a huge celebration while she was giving birth."
He laughed.
"Not that I got to enjoy it."

Beat. Olesya's brain imploded, her entire exterior ceasing any sort of movement. Her eyes were wide, her mouth slightly open. She couldn't process any of the words that just reached her ears, so her mind overloaded. Fiance? Birth? Twins!? They were not words she would attribute to Mathew, almost not ever. And unless the babies were hellishly early, they had to have been well on her way the last time she saw him.
And he'd told her nothing.
"..."
Olesya moved her lips slightly, attempting to make words but nothing came out. She decided to just keep looking at him dumbfounded, as it was the only thing she could manage.

"They actually hadn't been terribly early. Only a month or so. Bastille had just done a very good job of hiding the pregnancy from him. Between him being busy almost constantly and her habit of wandering off for months at a time, he hadn't known he was due to be a Dad until after their last meeting.
He did note her confusion though. Hell, Leon could probably seer it and he was blind. Mathew just responded with a tilt of his head. He didn't see why it was so shocking.
"What? Did you think I was a virgin or something?"
He asked with a small snort of a laugh.

Blink...blink...
"N-No..."
She said carefully, trying out her words as if they were the first she'd ever spoke. She wasn't stupid, mathew had obvious charisma...hell, even she'd fallen for him once...kinda-sorta-maybe-a-little-bit-but-she'd-never-actually-admit-it.
"You just...you're...a father."
Good, almost an actual sentence. The gears in her brain were starting to chug sluggishly back to life, trying to catch up with what was going on but still not quite there yet.

"Is that really so surprising?"
He had grown up quite a bit since high school. He had responsibilities and people that depended on him. He had always been honest and hard working, not to mention dedicated. Sure he rubbed people the wrong way sometimes. But he thought it was weird how shocking this was. Maybe she just thought he was not one to settle down?
"I thought I did fine with Maddie after all. Despite what some people think I'm not a heartless monster. And it's very rare for me to eat babies."

"No..it's just..."
That name again..it struck a chord in Olesya. Hadn't the girl in that room been named Bastille? The feisty one, back in the correctional facility when she had been forced to fight Mathew? her memories were slightly hazy from the chemicals and the constant torture, but she was fairly certain that was where she'd heard that name before.
"It seems we've both changed quite a bit."
The corners of her mouth twitched upward ever so slightly before settling back into a neutral thoughtful expression. The Mathew before her was different than the Mathew she'd run into a couple months ago, from the Mathew on the motorbike, and certainly the Mathew from the correctional facility. He had grown up, matured, settled into his skin much faster than Olesya had. Now, Olesya was just getting comfortable in her skin after everything she'd been through. The dust was just beginning to settle.
