David blinked, then he shook his head with a smile.
"I was gone for a few weeks...you left for a lot longer when you needed help, Les. I knew you would look after her when i was gone, and much like you I needed help, which I got through solitude...but I understand your meaning. Make sure you do the same, and get used to my ugly mug because you'll be putting up with me for life."
Meaning he would be involved in Maddies life forever, and wanted Olesya to know it.

Maybe there wouldn't be a fight today after all. A smile and a nod would accompany his words as Les turned to take the pancakes off the griddle to join the others. She turned off the stove and picked up the plate to take it to the table.
"Madelyn Grace! Food's ready! Hurry up before I eat it all!"
A pink and purple streak bolted into the kitchen, taking her normal seat with fervor. She picked up her knife and fork and banged them on the table.
"Pan-cakes! Pan-cakes! Pan-cakes!"
Olesya laughed, setting the plate down on the table and putting a pancake on her plate.
"Alright you, calm down and eat your pan-cakes."
She said, imitating her daughter's chanting in a normal inside voice. She sat down at the table, gesturing for David to take his fill before she served herself.

David would join them, chuckling a little to himself at Maddie and her antics. He pulled up a seat and took a plate, piling on four pancakes without hesitation, making sure to leave plenty for Olesya and Maddie. He caked them with syrup before starting to eat, making some small talk and answering some questions hes been looking to try and get answers to.
"So...Is August okay? I heard he got pretty roughed up..."
He wondered if the red head had told Olesya that he had ordered the man to protect her with his life if necessary, and that August told him he never even had to ask...probably not. It didn't seem like something the man would bring up in idle conversation.

"Yeah, but Youichi is nursing him back to health just fine."
She wasn't going to divulge how Youchi nearly tackled August to the ground when they went to reunite with her and Maddie, and disappeared shortly after. They'd have to surface for air at some point, and after years of misjudging the other's attraction to one another, they deserved it.
She took some pancakes for herself, leaning over to help Maddie cut hers into bite sized pieces.
"So Maddie...how would you like to stay with David every once in a while?"
Maddie gasped, nearly forgetting about her fork halfway to her mouth.
"REALLY!?"

David laughed.
"I bet."
Youichi and August were a good pair...and man, did that boy love her.
He cocked an eyebrow but then let it ease into a small smile at Olesyas suggestion to Maddie. He hadn't spoke with Les about it, as he had been worried about whether Les would be interested...her offering without any help from him was...different. He didn't expect it. But he was glad that she had done so...he turned his eye to Maddie for a moment...then turned them back to Les.
Yeah, he'd admit it. He checked her out. So what?
Returning his gaze to his pancakes, he'd make a mental note of this seemingly...very positive change that Les was going through, and that he would have to be around her more often to make sure it was sincere.

"You really mean it?!"
Maddie asked excitedly, looking between the two adults she looked to as her parents. Olesya smiled, something she couldn't help but do around Maddie. The girl had an express route to her heart strings, and was one of the reasons Olesya had healed following the asylum a couple years ago. Even a year ago she didn't feel as maternal toward the girl as she did now. She'd do anything to make sure Maddie was safe and happy.
"If you want to."
"Duh!"
Les cringed, it was the newest slang she'd learned from her friends, and used it at every opportunity much to Olesya's chagrin. She'd hoped terrible slang like that had died out whent he bombs fell. No such luck.

David winced a bit at the slang as well- he hadn't heard that since his days of junior high. One part of pre-fall culture he could do without.
"Well, good. I have tons of stuff around the house a little indentured slave can help with..."
He gave Maddie a wink before ruffling her hair. He would clear his through before turning his attention back on Les.
"He's gonna propose, you know."

"What's that?"
Maddie looked at him confused, not having learned what an 'indentured slave' was, and thus missing the entire joke. Olesya snorted slightly though, popping a forkful of pancakes into her mouth...
...and nearly choking.
"O-Oh?"
She coughed, her eyes watering slightly as she breathed precious, precious air. It was amazing how quickly tables could turn. Olesya and David had been together while August and Youichi made secret looks at each other over the dinner table, and now they're inseparable and she and David were recovering from being strangers. It made her chest tighten a bit.
"About time."
She said casually, skewering another piece of pancake and popping it into her mouth.

He gave a short chortle at Olesya nearly choking.
He decided not to make a derogatory choking reference- they were still on the mend, after all.
"Yeah...he told me about it just before the battle. That if He lived, he was gonna propose. I wonder if thats why their gone so long."
He hadn't seen much of Youichi since she had been with Les all the time, but he still loved the girl like a sister. She was an important part of his...and now Olesyas, life. He finished his pancakes in short order, and would stand to take them to the counter. He would wash them for her- after all, cook don't clean where he comes from.

Les finished her pancakes not long after David did, getting up and dropping the plate in the sink where he was washing.
"Thanks."
She tried not to think about how this used to be his sink...
Perhaps they would be okay afterall. Arranging visitation for Maddie, working together and being friends. Olesya realized she, too, needed to work on herself before she could be with anyone. Especially him.

He smiled, and finished up.
"Of course."
He took a deep breath and dried his hands, remembering not to lean in and kiss her.
"Well hey- I gotta run and check on some things. The pancakes were delicious...Maddie, perhaps later this week, you can come over, yeah?"
He'd walk over and give her a kiss on the top of the head, smiling as he headed for the door.
"Thanks for the meal....and the conversation. I'll see you soon, right?"

"Yeah come over again soon David!! We miss you!"
She jumped into his arms to give him a hug goodbye. She gasped and pulled away to run to her room.
"Hold on a second! Wait wait wait!"
She disappeared into her room. Rustling could be heard, and Olesya quirked her eyebrow at the door, glancing to David for a second as if to say 'what?' The child returned with a piece of paper in her hands. She handed him a picture she drew of herself in the middle with August and Youichi and Olesya and David on either side.
"I drew this for you!"
