He'd stare at her and wait for her to situate herself. A kindness she'd not have in a real fight.
"From the top." He'd say with a sigh, slipping back into position. They had a lot to go over.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the sun started to dip below the horizon he'd finally call it for the day. Sweat gleaming on his forehead and chest but otherwise good.
"There was progress."
"Blessed be to that, aye." she flopped down where she stood bruised and battered, not to mention sore working muscles that were not used before.
"Them questions you asked me previously... Can ya ask them to me again? Just maybe I can think about something." she shrugged. "I believe I know the answers ya'd give. She looked around the building colony. It is looking good here." she might be only seeing well from one eye but she was being honest. With her travels these little homey places were the most welcoming and... Calming.
"What are you willing to die for?"
He'd say, taking the practice blades and returning them to the rack. She probably was correct in assuming she could guess what he'd die for. This little patch of land was his home, it was the only home he'd ever really known. What was done to it to give it will didn't matter to him. He'd still die to protect it and those that lived here with him.
"We are fortunate the God's agreed to trade their labor for my intelligence or our rebuilding would be far slower."
He'd say, glancing back at his little village. Fires were being set up and some cheery music could be heard as people gathered for the evening.
"I'll think on it... I dont have much and I keep messing up what I do have. I've just been fighting to live."
She heard the music, and listened to what he said. It spoke something to her. "Aye... I wish more places were like this." she stood and put her hands on her hips.
A thought crossed her mind one that terrified her. She swallowed hard on the thought she could have fucked up their chance to keep this budding prosperity, she'd not speak of it however. It just is too soon to tell. "I'd be willing to die, so that people can laugh, dance, and and grow... So that lost ones like me can meet people who'd teach them something good in this sick world." she'd start walking back.
"Hmmm."
That's all he'd say, her reasons were her own. It was vague, but it was something. He felt like it was more than she had before at least. So there was that.
"I'm sure there are. Everyone has a home somewhere."
This was just his. He'd walk with her back to the main village as his people started cooking up food and bringing out drinks. A large boar roasting on a spit, it would take some time to cook, but the hunt was good. They would eat well tonight.
"Hungry?"
She'd take that as an invitation. And with a half smile she'd answer him. "Famished, and incredibly grateful you're offering." and with that she'd find a place by the warm glowing fire.
A couple of people in the crowd stood out, their attire different from the rest of the villagers. Less than a handful, they were talking among those setting up for the festivities, the younger two that had come along chatting it up with warriors closer to their own age. Bailey, decked out in her own attire sans the hat, didn't expect otherwise, much as she might wish it. Though they'd accepted this place as their new home, her people were still distant to the people they'd heard so much about. Blake alone couldn't erase the reputation of those who were violent and hated qi users, but he'd given a speech well enough that htey were willing to give it a shot along with guarantees from Bailey and her parents. Still, some were making the effort, and not just from prompting on her part once they'd arrived. It was a good start. A small smile tugged at her lips as she recalled how close they had been to this village and its people being annihilated - and that wasn't including the fight against their previous Elder. Looking at them now, laughing and reveling, enjoying each other's company by a fire, it was hard to imagine that nothing would have been left in its wake but dust and blood. Yet here they were.
"We are not inhospitable."
Despite what she may or may not believe about him from their initial meeting last Winter. Though that had been a duty for him, nothing more and nothing less. Certainly nothing personal. This was different, part of his duty now was to reach out to others. If his home and the only family he'd ever have was to survive he'd need to adapt and open them up to the outside world. They could no longer live isolated lives.
He'd lead her through the small crowd of people, stopping to greet and comment on people as he made his way. Congratulating one on a new baby here, and another for his report of the surrounding area there. They'd eventually make it to the fire and Blake would motion for her to mingle, seeing Bailey among the crowd with those of her people that were willing to try and meld in with his culture. It would be rocky to start, but he hoped they could both learn from each other.
Blake himself would take up a spot near some of the men playing music and would join in, vocalizing from his throat to add to the festivities, leaving the dancing for the others for the time being.
She never would have taken him as the at singing type. She sure wasnt the type, but dancing however...
She actually hadnt danced much with her metal leg. She wasnt actually sure it would be able to keep up with her. She would lift her pants legs a bit and rotate her ankle to test it. She could feel a bit of sand in its joint. From her. Seat she'd blow through the cache and try to clear out the bulk of it.
She recognized a face one she hadnt spoken to previously but knew as Blakes partner. Avice smiled, suppose they became a thing. She looked to fit in well here in their more traditional attire.
She shifted, relaxing as the music started in, the revelry unlike what they heard back home, and she could see the surprise in her people's faces, causing her smile to warm and shift into one that was closer to her normal expression. She took a couple of steps towards the dark haired young woman she had seen a couple of times on the field at Cabal, but had never heard her name or anything else other than she was now flying solo. With artificial limbs, too, apparently.
She raised a hand at the new guest and started to make her way over when she saw one of her own villagers beat her two it, walking up to Avice with bright eyes and an excited grin as the woman worked out some of hte sand from her limbs.
"That's some amazing auto mail! Where'd you get it?" He looked to be about Avice's own age, maybe a year younger. Bailey chuckled and shook her head, turning her attention to the sound of a familiar voice adding it's own tones to the music. She stopped near the fire, listening to the vocalizations adding new depth.
Blake continued to sing and add to the merriment while his people socialized. One of them, a younger man barely 18 summers had also approached Avice to marvel at her and her limbs. Staring directly at her metal arm and leg with an appreciating expression.
"Did you lose those in battle?"
The first fellow approached her and she looked at him and then to her metal before answering him
"Oh.. A fellow by John Sum--" the next one came and asked her how. Two fellows attracted to shiny things and she suddenly grew a slight smile. "Well perhaps it is story time... Bare in mind I was not the star of this story, but when a mighty battle of man verses beast erupted and I was with a force that dove into the den of these beasts. One by one I cracked carpaces into corpses fending our leader from taking on more than he needed to as he dealt with the king. Oi him was a big one and angry! Their king reared its ugly scorpion body towards us and I barely shoved meself and one of our out of the blast. Aye... I lost me limbs, soon before a Dragon shattered the ground and ripped him asunder!"
She twitched her fingers. "When they pulled me from the victory won I have a humble god to thank for making them. John Summers be his name. I owe the fellow a drink soon." she smiled
Avice had Caleb's rapt attention, though he would occasionally look at her limbs like they were the best thing since sliced bread. The story was a good one, and his attention quickly turned and stayed with her more.
It wasn't his fault. Really. They were really, really good quality.
"Sounds like you've got the courage for it, fighting a Dragon too." He'd flash Avice a grin and a wink. "Well, until then, I'd be down for us having a drink. I'm sure he wont' mind."
In the background, Bailey groaned and shook her head, smile still in place as the music continued. She went to mingle with some of the others from the village, mostly people she knew at this point: those she'd helped with cooking, clearing the debris, and preparing the dead for the massive pyre.
"You fought with a Dragon!? Did he have fangs? I heard they have fangs and can shift into the elements."
The young warrior was excited, almost bursting with energy. "It was noble of you to risk yourself for your fellow warrior. I am sure he honors you every day."
He'd glance over to the other guy talking about machines and not appreciating the flesh for who she was. He didn't understand the appeal.
"Drinking is fine, but what about dancing? Do you dance?"
Meanwhile, another warrior, one in his mid-twenties would approach Bailey bringing a fist to his fist to his chest with a small bow.
"Good evening." He'd rise and look her in the eyes with a warm smile. "Would you take offense if I said that tonight you have the radiance of a thousand fireflies dancing over a field of moon lilies."
"Aye... Shift into the elements he did but fangs? Nay, less fangs than me he has but bitin' was not his style." she looked off in the distance as her mind searched memories. "Him be like a mountain, thick skin, and hard words... But he was honest. And the battlefield was where his wings spread farther than the eye may see and cast a shadow over all claimin' to be the enemy." Yes she never doubt Mathew was a man of truth. Unlike another dragon she knew.
Her mind snapped from her thoughts as the boys asked about dancing and drinking. Asked her? And more so asked her to choose?
She raised both her hands. "Ya know in all the places I've ever been... Dont they go hand in hand?" her hands changed to one finger on each. "Better yet... If we are feasting. How about we drink until we can't dance no more, Aye? Who falls down first? I'll bet it isnt me." she smiled wide at the both of them. Silent looks to each egging them on to take her up on her challenge.
