"Back when Qi was just starting to awaken I didn't know how to control it. No one really did. The natural form mine took before I learned to shape the Earth was oppressive energy that would overpower and smother everyone else around me, blocking them from use. This is a throwback to those simpler times."
Though as Qi continued to evolve how it worked changed, that aura was long gone, but he still had this trick.
"What you should take away from that is there is always a way. But we are here for fundamentals."
The stone spike would turn to dust as Mathew slammed another foot into the ground causing another spike to erupt vertically this time behind Evelyn.
"Another advantage is it is likely your enemy will be on the ground, so with this ability, you turn the very battlefield into your weapon."

It wasn't something she'd heard before. Ares, Earth Dragon, those were the stories that tended to last. But with the change in subject, she refocused on teh stone, the earth rumbling around her as another spike formed behind her, out of sight. She stepped to the side to look up at the already formed spike. She could form the advantages she wanted or needed.
"Having the favor on my side." A lot more symbolic than a fancy spike in teh right spot.

He'd his foot down into the ground once more, another spike erupting but disconnecting from the ground as it flew upward at an imaginary target before arcing and falling back down.

She tracked the projectile with a small nod, noting the similarity to how she preferred to handle her own qi blades. Channeling his own energy with he earth left it strong enough that she could feel the energy in it when she focused on it. It was no weaker than the spikes on the ground.
"Bringing them back down to us." And making a less of a target of herself if she used it. No point in bringing the fight to the enemy if she could avoid it.

He meant killing them. But whatever. Letting the ground shift him back to give Eve some space he'd motion toward the ground.

She took a step back as he moved even farther, pulling at the flow of energy beneath her and pushing it out from the ground. It felt like she'd hit the wall running full force again as nothing happened. Again, she would pull at the flow, able to handle it but forcing it up and out to aim at the distance between them.
Crickets chirped.

His lips pressed together in a thin line. It was an attempt, kind of.
"It's easier if you use impact to help form and burst through its resistance."
He stomped his foot to show her, once again a stone spike erupted from the ground in front of him.

Seriously?
It made sense when she thought about it and how often she'd seen it, but she couldn't help but feel silly. Watching the demonstration, she inhaled a deep breath and tried again. Stomping her foot to teh ground, she pushed the qi flow through he crust to burst through. The only vibrations she got were in teh immediate area around her.
When it didn't work, she tried again, using more force as she tried to break through to an area closer to her in the distance between them.

"Nonono. You need to push the energy into the ground and then shape it at the point of impact. It's not going to let you guide it, you need to force it. Don't be gentle."
He'd slam his foot into the ground again to form another spike.

The exact opposite of what she'd been doing. There was a brief pause as she considered it and adjusted the way she thought about what she was doing. Forcing the energy as well as its shape. Making her will and energy stronger than what she stood on. Pushing it out like when she formed her constructs around her, but further out.
She pushed her energy down into the ground as she slammed her foot into, pushing for the spikes to break through.
The ground rumbled and a little bit of dust rose from the impact, but little more than if she hadn't used her qi.

More force it was! Evelyn kept the image in mind of a spike breaking through the ground towards teh empty space between them, stomping her foot on teh ground once more, refusing to take no for an answer, forcing her will into the action as her foot made contact again. The energy fizzled out before the spikes could form after contact.

Slower this time he'd wait for her to settle in before stomping his foot, another spike shooting out of the ground.

She stopped and observed as he repeated the motion. Feeling the energy delve into the ground with force, pushing and not seeking as the impact added extra oopmh to the motion, the spike shooting up from the ground as much from force of will as energy. She lost her own somewhere after contact; watching Mathew's spike form with ease had her lips pursing slightly. There was a small spread of energy from impact.
After a moment, she tried again, stamping her foot down with the intent to have the spike form and nothing else. Ifshe could feel the energy and draw it in, then there was no reason she couldn't force it out.
The forced energy would make it closer to the surface where the spike should have emerged before fading again.

He'd form another spike, he'd do this all day if he had to until she could copy him. He knew it was hard to shape something so solid with your will. But she was quickly improving. A lot faster than he had when he tried to figure this all out on his own.
