She went from gray to stark white.
"How do they get them back?" She felt her close up around the words. How much risk was she at, having the guard around? She trusted Zola to do the duty given to her, but if there were ways to change that, if Mr. E could read her thoughts and find a way...
It didn't look good.

Lord Riddel would shake his head slowly.
"That is still unknown to me. It is also not something I am actively looking into."

She considered that for a moment.
"I assume there haven't been many cases of it, then?" Her mind went back to the carriage Angelonia had mentioned where a noble family had been killed. What if that had been one of those guards?

"As far as I can tell... There have been two documented cases."

A newer phenomenon, then. At least on paper. Celia nodded slightly, barely moving her head as her chin remained tucked slightly.
"May I ask what they are?"

"There was an isolated incident where Royal Guards driving a noble carriage turned on them and left no survivors, and reports have been trickling in that a vast majority of the Blackburn houses Royal Guards had turned and joined the insurgent militia when things really kicked off."

Celia nodded, eyes downcast as her father seemed to confirm her concern. It was possible the family on their way to the gala had met their end from their guard, but the revelation about the Blackburn guard was more concerning. One relied on their Royal Guards most in such times of need; not being able to rely on them when the danger was strongest was terrifying.
"Young lord Blackburn also knows of this boy and the experiment, though he was not present when Mr. E revealed himself or spoke of our family. What would you have me do?"

Lord Riddel would study Celia for a few moments.
"Cut off your investigation here. You found nothing beyond what Valerian knows, the facility is destroyed or decayed beyond entry or use. Make sure the Young Lord Blackburn doesn't discover Mr. E. Do what must be done... Besides that, I hear he is busy with a deal that was made with the royal family, he must find a wife."

"Yes, Father." Cecelia bowed her head in obedience to her father's orders. Whatever mysteries lay beyond it were forbidden to her now, and though she doubted Valerian would investigate them on top of everything else going on in his life at the moment, there was Pride to worry about. he had been passionate about freeing the experiments from being living weapons, to have lives of their own. Now she would need to find a way to dissuade him if he had not already left, though her heart ached for the experiments that would never be able to be free again. Now they could be used, if Mr. E or his subordinates decided to do so. It was different, now that their existence was known.
The mention of marriage had her looking up at her father again, raising a brow as she heard the undertones of what could be in his observation. And if she should be wondering about her own betrothal announcement in the near future, after all.
"I don't imagine lord Valerian is keen on the matter." She thought of Angelonia, wondering what the girl thought of this now that the young lord was too far removed in standing to make a feasible union. Just what other kinds of games might her friend be playing?
