With the science department's blessing, Alex knew the hard part was over. He was eager to begin recruiting, and had stayed up half the night working on a poster. As he finished taping one of the ads to the front door of Building 1, he smiled to himself: He wondered how many would be clever enough to figure out where the first meeting was being held... ((OOC: Post your character's reaction to the ad, and include some information on how you solved the puzzle. Try to avoid spoilers, though. Soon I will continue this post with a description of the first meeting; if any of you want to RP what might happen if you show up early, feel free)).

Sara stared at the poster. What the hell? She crossed her arms. Something was missing. What the hell. She cocked her hip to the side as she took a step closer and examined it. She didn't know why she was doing this, it wasn't like she was all that interested in Engineering. She glanced around her. No one. Well... She had nothing better to do anyways on this boring Tuesday afternoon. She looked again at the poster, noting the batman, and the other stupid things on it. What had caught her attention was the utter absurdity of it. It was so... simple? No simple, wasn't the right word. She wanted to giggle at it. It was cute? Simple and cute? No. Still not right. Oh forget it.
She read it again. OH! There was no meeting place on it. Or time. She smiled at this. Who in their right mind would hang up posters for a club and forget to put the time and place on it? She looked at the background. She really like the colors. Really pretty... Maybe she would design the walls of her room at home like that. What did they call that effect? Sponging or something? She stared at it a moment longer. There was something about the borders that caught her attention. She stepped closer to the poster, her nose nearly touching it. I know what that is!!... She took another look around. Still no one. She carefully untaped the poster from the wall and sat down with it, leaning back against the wall and pulling her bag to her. She took out a pen and paper and began making notes. When she finished, she taped the poster back to the wall and walked off to find a place to work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sara walked through the doors ten minutes early. She looked around. The place was empty. She sighed. Why was she here again? She had no interest in Engineering. She was here because she had spent time working on figuring out the riddle to that STUPID poster. Not that it had taken her long, but it was the principle behind the matter. She had taken the time and energy to figure it out, so she might as well come and see what this was all about. And who knew, maybe it would be interesting. She liked to take an optimistic outlook for things. She moved to the back of the room, and leaned against the wall, instead of taking a seat somewhere, crossing her ankles and placing her hands on her hips. She glanced at the clock. She hoped it didn't take to much longer for someone else to show up.
***SPOILER*** OOC I don't know how to prove I solved it, so I'm just going to put letters and numbers and hope no one uses it to cheat I guess, but I hope it proves I figured it out.
It was 4:25. Class was over, and students began to trickle into the Physics Lab room. By 4:35, Alex had arrived.
Alex surveyed the room as he entered. Not as many as he had hoped for, but that was, after all, the downside of including a mini-IQ test as an enrollment requisite. So far, seven students were present, and only one female, who was unfortunately sitting in the back of the room. Alex walked silently to the front of the room and wrote 'Welcome to the #259 Engineering Club!' in big, white letters. He turned to face the students, and smiled brightly.
"Please, have a seat," he said. Alex's voice was calm, soothing, even melodic. Most of the students were still engaged in conversation, and this was his way of letting them know that he was about to begin. When the room was silent, Alex ran a hand through his shaggy, but handsome, hair, and cleared his throat. "You," he said, indicating with his hand the girl who sat in the back, "Come closer, please. Take a seat up here with your classmates." Alex's tone was polite and friendly, without a hint of demand. Alex knew that in this very male environment he would have to work extra hard to keep the girl's interest level high.
"First, I should congratulate each of you for solving our first puzzle," he said, addressing the entire class and flashing a devilish grin. "In so doing, you have clearly demonstrated that you are more observant than your peers. I think that is something that you all should take pride in. Such a talent will stand you in good stead."
"You are probably wondering what the hell it is we do here," Alex continued. The statement wasn't meant to be a particularly funny joke, but the break in formality drew a small chuckle from one of the students in the audience. Alex knew that a lot of the socially-awkward, math types were quick to laugh at sarcasm, and Alex liked that about them.
A student ashamedly shuffled into the room. "It's alright," Alex said. "Take a seat over there--we're just getting started," he said, with an attractive smile.
"Many of you, I think, will soon find this to be the funnest club on campus. We do a lot of neat things here." Alex's beautiful, amber eyes seemed to sparkle as they moved over the crowd. "As you can see, we're in the Physics Lab, and I've been given a key. All the spare parts you see in class we can take apart and use." Alex opened his backpack and began placing items from it onto the table in front of him. "I've also brought in a few parts of my own. Transistors, capacitors, tools, lots of spare computer equipment--we have enough here to build a small supercomputer if that's what you decide to do." With everything laid out on the table, Alex stowed the backpack underneath it and continued.
"Here's the basics of how this club will work: each week, I will present a puzzle for all of you to solve, which will take the form of a real-life obstacle. Each of you will have to use your scientific expertise to design, and eventually, build a device that will overcome that obstacle. Then we'll test to see who's gadget works the best. Oh, and I encourage you all to work in teams of two or three."
"That's the basic framework. I want to emphasize, though, that this club can be as decentralized and as open to each of your needs and desires as you wish. Bring in your own problems, or ideas. If you've ever wanted to learn how a piece of equipment works, here is the place to find out, modify it, and make it better. We'll all be learning a lot from each other, and it will be hands-on, applicable, and fun."
"Any questions?" Alex said,with a cocked eyebrow and a smile.
Post by Skyler Haley on Feb 3, 2009 23:39:23 GMT -8
That has got to be the worst poster ever made for an engineering club. But still, the crappy poster was made for an engineering club. That meant, in layman's terms, making shit. However, making shit wasn't free. There were material costs involved. That's why someone with all of Batman's tech needs to be a billionaire. So when was it? There was no time on the poster. Nor place. So it was time to begin the investigationary goodness. Right? But this wasn't a big mystery to solve, all that had to be done was find an engineering teacher, or shop teacher rather, and ask them.
------------------------------------------------------------ 10 Minutes Later
"Read the f*cking poster."
------------------------------------------------------------ 2 Minutes Later
None of the posters were any different. Maybe there was some hidden message. Kind of stupid to slap down a hidden image. It was Where's Waldo, but infinitely less red, white and blue. Also less entertaining. But finding the special message was easy enough. It was a simple visual problem most would overlook on their first pass. The more artistically-minded would likely catch it easier. But then there was deciphering.
That was Skyler's territory, no problem. Just some quick notes, and a trip to a computer.
--------------------------------------------------- That One Time At That One Place
If there was something Skyler was, it was punctual. Timing was big when it came to detective work. But Skyler was in the door a good nine or eight minutes early, having stopped along the way to pick up a Dr. Pepper. It made the world taste better. And it was something to do. Skyler wasn't exactly well known. Quite the opposite considering the newly joined status. Social skills weren't Skyler's forte anyways. But there was someone else there already.
A dame.
Shame the word wasn't used anymore. It was fun. Better than the more common chick, ho, or bitch. Skyler was polite enough to give the girl a tip of the hat and a nod of acknowledgment. Then, as the blue-clad junior detective looked for an optimal seat, the cap of the soft drink was cracked open. Skyler took a seat quietly, off to the side of the room. The junior detective would simply sip from the drink slowly, waiting for the club to start, hoping the members weren't as ridiculous as the poster suggested. It was fine to have a sense of humor, but quite another to make crappy advertising out of it.
Sara breathed a sigh of relief as students began to trickle in one by one about 5 minutes after she arrived. The first student, tipped his hat to her, and sat down. Well, at least they seemed friendly. She gave a small, shy smile back.
She noted that the other students were all male, and seemed to be the nerdy/smart type. A few looked at her with interest, but she otherwise ignored them. They all took seats, but she remained at the back wall, slightly uncomfortable with just taking a seat like the rest of them. She amused herself by examining from where she stood, the strange objects around the room.
Another 5 minutes later, after it seemed everyone had arrived, the person whom Sara assumed was leading the club entered. He surveyed the room, and after welcoming them by writing on the board he began.
His voice was nice, and it made Sara slightly more relaxed, but she continued to stand at the back wall. She felt out of place here, but refused to leave after the effort she had put into figuring out the riddle. He congratulated them as a group, and flashed them a smile. Sara couldn't help but smile back. He seemed interesting enough. But whether he, or this club, was interesting enough to keep her around, she had yet to see.
She listened closely to what he was saying, not wanting to miss anything. She knew little enough about engineering as it was, and would need all the information she could get. She watched as he pointed out certain parts. Pshh, right. Watch me remember those now. She rolled her eyes, smiling to herself.
As he mentioned working in groups of two or three, she glanced around the room, sizing up the other members, trying to see if there was anyone she would be interested in working with. She sighed. She didn't deal with people very well. She would just wait and see who approached her. Hopefully it would be someone she could work with.
The guy finished his speech. She thought for a second. Did she have any questions. Hmm... No, not really. Only who would be willing to work with her and wasn't a complete douche. She glanced around the room again, her eyes falling to the first person who had entered, considering, and then her eyes fell back to the guy at the front. She waited for him to continue.
