Lucifer was in his den in his favorite red chair. A roaring fire in the fireplace and more books than most people would read in a life time filling his shelf. Tomes from every world that was and would be. All of the greats and classics from Lord of the Rings, to the Metaphysical Truths of the 7th dimension. First edition obviously. It was a quiet life, his agents ran his affairs in this world which allowed him and his children to live in peace far away from the troubles that befell this world, and would continue to befall this world. Though it was no shack like in the last world that had been consumed he had certain habits he stuck too. Namely staying in a remote location, away from where trouble was likely to spill over and give him... unwanted attention.
"Are you ready for today's lesson?"
The curl of his lips was as always knowing, asking questions he knew the answer too. But the answers were never for him. A constant in all times with these creatures. Consumed by their predictability and base instincts and half baked moral quandaries. He was always charmed by them, huddling in the darkness clinging to whatever light they find. Basing their whole world views on small fragments of what was their and true as they stumbled blindly from moment to moment. He'd given them knowledge once, paid his pound of flesh and for it he was reviled by most. Feared by the ignorant, and distrusted by the foolish.
But he was nothing if not a giver. So once again, like so many times before he would give them a chance to prove their worth. To be their true selves. The future he saw was not one of subjection or salvation. All important things in existence began the same as this lesson.
With a question and a choice.
