Emily closed her laptop. Disconnecting the hard drive that now hosted the DVD she had copied to it, she stuffed it in her pocket and left the small apartment she shared with the man who looked after her. He was a drunk, and a drug addict- if she vanished tomorrow he wouldn’t even notice. He might even sell off her things. Like it mattered- she was more interested in the workings of things outside this complex.
After stashing the drive in a secret location, she would head off to the small alley behind a drug store. At one in the morning the place was deserted, and she had disconnected the cameras. Looking down at her hands, she would clench them and look up at the broken fridge that had been set by the dumpster for pick up. She would rush forward and throw a solid punch at it, a metal-rending sound blaring throughout the alley. A dent, a little larger than her fist was what remained. She brought her hand back slowly and looked down at the rough palm. A very….unladylike hand. She turned and walked back, pulling down her hood and activating it’s ability. She put her left leg forward, bending both legs into a sideways horse stance.
She brought her left hand up, hand out in a claw. Her right hand was clenched at her hip. Her eyes focused on the dumpster. She tried to find the rage. The anger that bubbled up inside but….nothing changed. She was playing herself, and her body knew it. Putting on a front for a world that wasn’t watching. She closed her eyes, and pictured her parents. Pictured her mother, laughing and kissing her cheek. Her father, scooping her up after work and spinning her around, laughing. Emily’s jaw clenched, and as her eyes open they had a liquid feeling to them as the anger evaporated.
Her fist shimmered, and an array of shadows swirled around them for a moment before sinking into her fist.
FLASH
She peered out of the large cupboard she’d stuffed herself into, to hide herself from her father. He’d come home, exhausted as always, yet still found the initiative to move into his office. She saw his outline, standing on the other side of his desk with a scotch in hand. He swirled it about, bringing up his other empty palm and looking at it. Her tiny eyes widened, watching as tendrils seemed to swirl off it. The hand holding the glass shook, and Emily was almost scared enough to come bursting out and scream for her mother. The terror, however, wasn’t done. It wasn’t over. She saw another shadow move into the room- one she couldn’t make out or didn’t know.
She heard her father drop the glass and she quickly closed the drawer, shuffling deeper into the cupboard and covering her ears with her hands. She heard several crashes, crying silently before hearing a large mass hit the floor. She waited for what seemed like forever before opening the cupboard. She slowly crawled out, eyes on the form that was laying on the ground face down. An arm was bent around the back, and as she approached her bottom lip began to shake. She stared, hard, at the body of her father. At his lifeless corpse, his neck twisted at an odd angle.
She’d never screamed so loud.
FLASH
She burst forward, the concrete cracking a little under the pressure. She slammed her fist forward, and rather than indent the dumpster her fist blew right through it, clear up to the shoulder. She pulled it out, looking down at her hand and opening it slowly. The shadows seemed to hiss as they evaporated out of her hand. Her brow furrowed.
“What…?”
She clenched it again, then let it slide down by her side. She would look up at the sky, trying to sort out what it was, exactly, that gave her such a power. Assuming her father discovered the same before he was taken, she decided she would keep it secret- especially from those at school. Best not to flaunt it, even if others came out with abilities of their own. If someone could identify her simply for that ability, her work to get lost in the system would mean nothing. She pulled up her hood and let out a little sigh, stuffing her hands back in her pockets and making the long walk back home.
Tomorrow, she would need to revisit the administrator. Let him see the video for himself….and see what came of it.
