Preston yawned and stretched from his spot in his room. The small box in front of him finally finished, with nothing left to do but give it the enchantment that it needed. He regretted that he would be unable to return home for the holiday. But with all of the chaos since the Black Water incident, he was needed here to follow up on reports, and to do other administrative work to make sure deployments were running smoothly.
However, he didn't want the family to think that he had forgotten about them. Each of his siblings already had their presents wrapped, it was the one for his parents that he was working on. Trying to get it finished in time for the final mail call before the holidays. He could only hope that it would arrive on time.
Taking his glasses off for a moment, setting them on the table so he could rub his temples in peace. Quitely humming the tune of the music box as he tried to envision the effects of the spell. He wanted to make sure it was perfect for them. Better than the junk you could buy at a street vendor. After a few minutes, however, the break was over and it was time for him to return to work.
Taking his inscribing pen he began to etch the runes along the music box, letting them twist and flow in an almost whimsical way. Like they were being blown away snowflakes in the wind. The process took another several hours before it was completed to his satisfaction. Mostly reworking the water and wind ruins to make sure the illusion matched what was in his head. It was a pain in the back to do it with people, especially with the detail he was trying to put into it. But it was Christmas, and in a way, this was the only way they would all be together this year. So it was important to make sure it was done right.
When the package eventually reached home inside would be an elegant music box. One that once opened would play a classic Christmas song. The runes along the box would begin to glow a soft blue while opened, the bottom and top halves of the final rune aligning when the lid was up to activate the spell. Creating a small illusion over the box of the whole family standing next to each other with smiles on their faces and a gentle snowfall around them. It wasn't the real thing, but it was the best he could do under the circumstances.
