"OoooUuuCH!" Dime cried as her mother was pulling so much hair and a toy that was tangled in poor Dime's thick hair. she was about five years old and her brother Quarter who was pouting while he waited to get his toy back, impatiently.
So impatiently in fact he had the controller in hand and started the helicopter like blades again burying it deeper into a mess. Making Dime cry out louder as it yanked, pulled, and tore her hair from her scalp.
Mother got so mad and dead cold eyes got the very expensive crystal powered drone and broke it with a quick snap ripping it apart to get it out of Dime's hair. Instead of salvaging it peacefully Quarter gave her no choice. A tears streamed from a sniffling Dime's face her brother looked at his younger sister with vengeance in his gaze. As if it was her fault his toy broke after he was the one chasing her with it through the big house to begin with. It scared her for this very reason, it only got her hair but what if it took a finger or an eye ball?
Gertrude get the rest of Dime's hair untangled." The.head maid got to work on brushing Dime's now matted nest. "I'll get you another one Quarter, your Father will be back in a couple of weeks and I'll get him to bring back one when he does." His mother cooed her son.
"TWO WEEKS!?" he was appalled. "THAT IS FOREVER!" he threw his controller down and stomped on it breaking what is now a useless controller.
"Well you shouldn't have got it in your sisters hair to begin with." Mother argued.
"It wouldn't have gotten stuck if she stopped running, I was having fun." He argued back.
"And now you're not... Was it worth it?" She asked.
"No... She wasn't worth it." He said. Which made Dime go silent she actually almost felt at fault for this and looked at the broken toy pieces with slight guilt. As Mother and Quarter left the room with Dime and Gertrude, Quarter looked back with absolute hatred and she could tell she was going to pay for this later.
Gertrude would wait however before speaking again. "Dime you shouldn't feel bad, I heard you ask him to stop and you were not having fun were you?"
She sniffled a snot filled nose and a quivering lip. "N-n-no!"
Gertrude's hands were much more patient and gentle than Mother's. Dime hardly felt any pain. "Then don't let him get to you from where I'm standing you are not at fault. Your Mother would agree but Quarter is a special case."
"Am I not special too?" Dime would ask. She never understood why Quarter got better and more presents on every occasion. Father always brought him stuff from his trips. And he was more valuable to them to inheriting their business.
"Dime you have to find your own kind of special... Understand?" She finished brushing her hair and turned to look at the girl. "You and Quarter will go different paths... Yours, you have to find and fight for while he has it easy and laid out for him on a red carpet. Neither one of you have a choice in this arrangement. It is just a matter of time and effort which will pay out in the end. Be strong and don't take his crap."
"O-o-kaaay." She sniffled and wiped her eyes. She didn't understand yet what Gertrude meant but it didn't stop her from trying to figure out what to do. She stayed awake thinking about it and during that night she heard her door open. She buried her face beneath the blanket and poked an eye through the covers. She saw Quarter carrying presents to Dime's room and they were what we were supposed to open on Christmas morning. The paper was already torn and she could see wat presents were inside.
The wicked grin on his face was enough to know she was about to get in trouble. More so for Quarter framing her to be opening presents before everyone. There were even gifts for mother and father strode everywhere by the time he was done. He was smart knowing Dime couldn't read very well yet. And as big as their house was it was only a matter of time before Quarter was back with Mother to point and blame.
But what could she do?
Immediately she threw off the blankets started gathering the presents. Would she hide them?
She started stuffing them in a purple wagon and had a thought!
There was a secret tunnel that connected all the rooms with small doors to each one. Dime used them a lot to hide and get around the place faster. She pulled her wagon which was heavy to boot now with presents. But with a quick budge and some tricky wagon driving she got to Quarter's room in moments she dumped the presents on the far side of his bed and ran back leaving the wagon in the secret hall as she heard voices by her door she leaped in her bed and pretended to sleep just in time to hear her door come open once more.
"Quarter..." She heard Mother's voice whisper growing more angry that he dragged her out here without the sight of the presents.
"I saw her Mother they were right here!" He was actually quite loud.
Dime turned in her bed to make sure they didn't see her awake and grinning.
"No more off to bed with you." She demanded.
"But M-" he started.
"No buts!" She hissed.
He huffed and marched Mother followed to make sure he was situated. And the uproar that started... She felt relief and smiled from ear to ear.
Dime ruined Christmas for Quarter that year for sure but Dime didn't care she didn't feel like she lost a damn thing. He didn't get Gertrude's best ever chocolate tart and he forever lost his drone.
