Rowan had been sitting in relative bliss with his mother and father. As usual, he was ever eager to help with preparations. While many things could be quickly done with spells, Rowan liked to take his time and do it all by hand. Like decorating the massive tree in the living-room that he couldn’t possibly reach the top of.
That just meant climbing on a whole bunch of things. No big deal.
Despite his difficulty, the tree would be done, and the piece-de-resistance was the star. A beautiful clear ornament with a crystal inside that shone splendidly. A truly marvelous piece! He carefully climbed to place it at the top of the tree, only for the room to shake violently as his brother entered. Rowan miraculously would find his balance, even as the tree swayed and threatened to be thrown to the floor.
“Ah, brother you have gif-“
“Wait, is this everybody?”
Oh. He didn’t hear him. Rowan would just chuckle and shrug, even as his brother asked questions he already knew the answers to. Rowan remain quiet as he continued to speak out loud and their parents naturally became concerned.
And then everyone was yelling.
He remained quiet, getting the tree to be solid again and noting that the star had held on despite the bumpy ride. That was nice. When the arguing stopped and everyone was rather quiet for the rest of the night, Rowan helpfully made his way over and placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder.
“Mother, Father, I’ll go with him. I’ll watch over him.”
Did that bring comfort? Was it worse now that the other one was leaving too? Rowan liked to think it was the former.

“I also finished putting up the tree~.” He’d chuckle, trying to change the topic and hopefully the mood. Slowly but surely, his positive comments and chatter worked and Christmas wasn’t nearly as…sour…as Simon had left it at. But it seemed like the home was going to end up quite empty this year.
