It was a silent night that Soni walked in, and mildly chilly. She was on her way back from Balca, her hands in her pockets and her head wandering as her gaze danced across her wooden surroundings.
As she stepped out of the light forest, she could finally see her favorite scene along her route: an old abandoned airfield. The huge dilapidated metal birds were everywhere, with loose wires hanging here and there. The clouded sky and the silence gave it a pretty eerie feel, truly.
It was the interruption of this eerie silence that made Soni jump in place. A sudden clank from metal hitting metal rang out, giving away an unseen ghost’s position.
Her hands were suddenly out of her pockets and at the ready, her posture lowered in defensive preparation. She could tell that it was coming from the inside of a huge carrier plane ahead of her. As another clank resonated in the open air, the girl slowly began moving to a position where she could see into the plane from which the sound was coming.
Soni tiptoed into a smaller jet, all the way to the end. Out the broken front windows, she could see a boy inside the carrier plane, whose tail was catty-corner to the nose of the plane Soni resided in. He seemed to be rummaging through every storage space he could find.
She wasn’t sure what to do… on one hand, she could walk away. On the other hand, she could help him out. If she helped him out though, he could be a bad guy. He could also be a perfectly fine guy.
After a minute of deliberation, she settled. After a quick breath, Soni called out, “Who are you?”
The boy immediately unsheathed a knife, and his neck became a quickly twisting swivel. “Who are you?!” he shouted back in response.
The masked girl sent out a blast that carried a tone equivalent to the frequency of the metal carrier. The earnumbing note shook the metal so violently that it threw the boy and his weapon to the ground.
“Ah! What the hell?!?!” he shouted on the way to and on the ground.
“I asked you first.”
The boy made an angered face, and went to get the knife he had dropped. He was quickly interrupted, however, by another violent shake of the aircraft he resided in.
Curses flew out the boy’s mouth. “Alright! Alright! The name is Kai, happy?!” By now he had once again stood, his eyes darting everywhere, trying to find his attacker.
Soni had gathered by now that this kid wasn’t dangerous. At least, not dangerous enough that he would pose much of a threat in combat.
“Yes,” she answered happily. She followed her answer with a blast that blew a hole through the front of the plane she was in, one just big enough that she could fit through.
Kai’s head quickly snapped to the scene, and he watched with a face that said he was ready to attack at any moment.
The girl hopped through the hole and slowed her decent with another blast, landing firmly on her feet. “My name’s Soni, by the way,” she introduced as her hands returned to her pockets.
“What do you want?” the boy demanded, his fists in the air.
Soni found a pile of crates to half-sit, half-lean on. “To help you out, to be honest. What are you looking for?”
Kai’s face had a mixture of angered confusion and disbelief. “Why do you want to help me?”
“I mean,” she thought for a moment. “I don’t really have anything better to do.”
His concern lessened, but didn’t disappear. His fists lowered, despite him remaining defensive. “I’m looking for Christmas music.”
Soni lifted an eyebrow. “Christmas music?”
Kai nodded. “I lead a village of some orphanage kids. Christmas is coming up, and I figured it’d be a pretty cool present if I could get everyone some jingle bells or something. Maybe find some music I’ve never heard before.”
Beneath her mask would've been a smile, and to Kai it would seem as though there was. “Well it just so happens,” she began as she got a hold of her mp3 and pulled it out. “I can help with that.”
Kai gave a look of complete confusion.
“Oh right..” She forgot most didn't have access to this stuff. “This is called an mp3. It can play music that it has stored in it. Out of these,” she said, tapping her headphones.
The boy continued staring at the contraptions.
“Here, uh,” Soni turned the device on and found the Christmas folder. As limited as it was, the father of her caretaker was sure to put at least some on it. With the push of a button, it started playing out her headphone's speakers for Kai to hear.
A huge smile slid its way onto his face. “I can’t believe you can do that…”
“It’s definitely a handy thing,” Soni mused, giving the device a prideful look.
“Could you come back with me? To the village? So you can play it for everyone else??
Soni checked the time on her P.T., then sent Veronica a message. Her head went back up as she answered, “Let’s go!”
The boy took her to a horse, and rather hurriedly they raced off toward Kai’s destination.
They arrived at a treetop village in a deep and colorful forest. There only grounded part was a walled off entrance that opened to them at the sound of a horn. Dismounting the horse, Soni could hear a bunch of children cheer “It’s one eye Kai! One eye Kai is back!”
After exciting introductions to various village members, Kai took Soni to a central part of the village with a hefty campfire in the middle.
“Everyone close your eyes, and imagine lights of all different colors! And colorful presents and trees!”
The children were all grinning, when Jingle Bells began playing from Soni’s speakers. There wasn’t a single kid that could keep their eyes closed; all of them gazed at Soni’s headphones in wonder.
“Pretty cool, right?”
Thus the night went on, all of the kids dancing about the campfire, and singing along once the songs repeated.
