(screams in the distance)
"What the hell?"
Mal would sprint in the direction of the screams. Someone was in need of help, and it didn't matter who it was, Mal was going to help them. Upon reaching the destination Mal would find a mid-height scrawny man with a white sack obviously full of toys and a knife held to the throat of a small boy child. Luckily, Mal had not been spotted yet, and he knew enough of the situation to immediately hide.
"Damn it, I can't even see how many innocent people are in there!" Mal would mutter to himself.
He would be using the cover of night to quickly move around the building to try and get around to the back door. He slowly turned the handle to find the door locked. Meanwhile the struggle inside had gotten worse.
"Where are the rest?" The assailant demanded. "Give me all of them!"
The woman he was shouting at was terrified beyond belief. Her entire body was shaking as she followed the man's orders. Her eyes shifted for just a moment and met Mal's.
"Let me just go and get the rest of the valuables from the kitchen." She spoke shakily.
The woman walked over toward the counter near the back door and opened it revealing a few jewels. Using the rustling of the items in the drawer as a sound cover she unlocked the back door.
"Hurry up woman!" Shouted the assailant.
The woman nodded through tears, grabbed a handful of jewels and moved back over the robber. She intentionally had the robber facing away from the back door. Mal waited a few moments and slowly opened the back door being as quiet as possible. Creeping slowly toward the masked man. When Mal got close enough, he tackled the man, releasing his grip on the knife and the child. The woman watching quickly grabbed the knife before Mal could react and stabbed the assailant in the neck, killing him on the spot.
"What the hell?!" Mal exclaimed as he scrambled to get back to his feet. "I had him under control! Why did you kill him?!"
The woman held Mal's shoulders softly as she guided him towards the front door.
"Don't you worry now... We'll handle this." Her words were like piercing daggers. "You should know how grateful we are. Here have this." She would hand Mal an odd-looking plant as she placed one hand in the center of his back slowly guiding him, not pushing him, out the front door.
Mal didn't say another word. He couldn't bear to look the woman in the eye, let alone speak. He accepted the token of appreciation, sobbing into it as he slowly walked away from the structure. A sign labeled 'Godfrey's Orphanage' Crumbled in the distance.
I can't believe he lied to me about the state of the world. I've been so sheltered. This is maddening. Surely not everyone can be this awful? It wasn't just the men... but the women... and the children too...
"God damn my father, damn him to hell."
