Spec Ops Recruitment Assignment
Requirements: Academy Graduation
Job: An obstacle course has been erected with auto turrets firing Qi Crystal cannon energy with multiple points to reach. Your character must escort a blindfolded ally to each point where they remove the blindfold and enter a secret code to activate the point. They put the blindfold back on and you bring them to the next point. Reach the final goal as fast as you can.
Payout: Unknown, Becoming a Special Operations Agent Recruit.
Donovan had sent in his request to join the Special Operations Squadron not too long after his graduation from the academy, following the Black Water Incident. He had gotten accommodations, accolades, awards, medals, badges of honor… And more pats on the back and handshakes than he had ever had in his life. All for… literally no reason in Donovan’s opinion. They fought, and they lost. People say it was an overall win, but they lost the territory. So, it was still a complete loss. A partial win is just a nice way of covering up the fact that you didn’t succeed. But it seemed, quite apparent, that Donovan was the only one that thought this… All these thoughts ran through his head as he looked at his options for his future in Cabal. He had selected Spec Ops for one specific purpose. From now on, he wanted to make a difference.
So, here he was now at the coordinates he was sent to. Shortly after turning in his Application he had received from an unknown source, titled simply. “Spec Ops Testing site.” When Donovan got there it was a mediocre and rather unassuming warehouse. With a man standing in front.
“Uh, I’m here for the-”
“Evaluation. Yes, thank you for coming. Follow me and I will explain.”
The man then walked inside the warehouse. Donovan followed only to see that inside the warehouse was rather large… but completely empty. The man stopped and turned around.
“Today, you will be leading me through an obstacle course. I will be blind folded, and you will have to deal with enemy fire at not just yourself, but me as well. At the half-way point I will take off my blindfold and you will have to lead me through an even harder challenge until we reach the other side. Is that understood?”
Donovan blinked. Looked at empty warehouse and back at the man.
“But… this place is empty…”
The man sighed.
“Yes, because in order for this to work I can’t know what is out there, so the obstacles won’t pop up until after I’ve been blindfolded.”
That made sense… Donovan would nod.
“Let’s do this!”
With that the man would put on a blind fold. The moment the Blind fold was tied and secured the floor of the warehouse would open up and an obstacle course would appear! First up. Was an unprotected ramp being guarded by Qi Turrets!
“Hold on to my shoulders.”
Donovan would tell the man as he stepped forward. As soon as he stepped onto the ramp the turrets aimed at him! Donovan smiled and held out his harm, he had gotten it adjusted recently and now a flat disc would pop out of either side of his arm making a mock shield! He would hold it up letting the blasts hit his metal arm leaving barely a scratch. Easy. He would think as he kept walking. After he had made it about 75% of the way up the turrets stopped shooting and retreated. Donovan hesitated as he felt a large rumbling in the ground. Before Donovan could even question what the sudden earthquake was a giant boulder heading straight for them!
Donovan panicked at first only to remember something he had discovered about his new boots.
“I hope this works…”
“What?”
The man behind him said, slightly concerned. Then the boulder would crash into Donovan who had become unmovable. He held the rock in place for a moment grunting and sweating. But it had stopped! With a little bit more effort he was able to roll it off the side and down into the chasm beneath them.
“Got it…”
He would say breathing hard as the continued forward. Next up was a bridge with fire spewing on either side and two pendulum blades swinging chaoticly!
“Alright… So, stay very. Very close. I only just recently learned how to do this…”
The man’s only response was to step really close to Donovan. At the foot of the bridge he closed his eyes and concentrated hard. Focusing on that meditation thing that that one dude told him about.
“Make. The ability. Mine.”
Then, he one chain of darkness would come out of his back, then another.
“Ok, now. Control…”
He focused on making sure the chains knew his wants. Which was to stop the pendulums! With that single thought both chains would shoot out wrapping around each blade, holding them in place. Sweat started to bead down Donovan’s head from the strain.
“Lets. Go.”
He struggled to say while moving as fast as he could while maintaining focus on the chains. Once they reached the end of the bridge Donovan released the blades and took a breath. Then he saw the key pad.
“Yo, you’re up my dude.”
The man took off the blind fold and went to type in the code. As soon as he did though a pressure plate was stepped on! Activating a new blade to hurtling towards them! Reflexively Donovan shot out both chains to catch the blade stopping it just before impact to them!
“Open. The. Door.”
Donovan would say obviously struggling! But the man was already on it typing his code the door opened and they both rushed inside. The blade, now released, smashed into the bridge and destroyed it.
“Shit!”
Donovan exclaimed. The man just nodded but put back on the blind fold.
“Ready to start phase two when you are.”
The man would say. Donovan took only a moment to take a deep breath before moving forward. This time in front of him was just a series of walls. He was on high alert though. Something felt off. After navigating through rows and rows and rows of identical walls it clicked this was a maze.
“Shit.”
“What?”
“Nothing. I got this.”
Donovan would say as he contemplated which path to take, left or right… which way had he come from? Which way was the way he needed to go… Hmmm… He pondered for a moment, but that moment was too long as a Turret popped up and shot him!
“Fuck!”
Donovan called out at the sudden sting of being shot! But when he turned to look at the turret it was gone! Then pow! Shot from behind again! Donovan was getting pissed!
“Lets go!”
He would say grabbing the man and running to the left only to end up at a dead end, which was rewarded by two turrets popping up and shooting at him.
“DAMMIT! FUCK THIS!”
Donovan raged as a black mist covered his body! He grabbed the man under his good arm and then punched the wall with his metal arm and ran through it, then the next one, then the next, and so on. The walls got stronger, changing from Brick, Concrete, all the way to thick sheets of metal. None of it stopped Donovan’s fist! Finally the exit was in front of him as he took the steps to the exit the hair on the back of his neck stood up! He dropped the man and grabbed his sword, spinning around sending a slash of pure and massive energy in a wave behind him! Just in time to completely destroy 4 turrets that had all popped up to shoot him and the man he was with. Donovan’s power finally deactivated and he breathed hard.
“Alright, that’s the end. Lets go.”
He helped the man stand up and together they walked to the door. The man once again took off his blind fold and opened the door. They walked out and to Donovan’s surprise they exited the back of the warehouse.
“What the…”
The mand dusted himself and nodded.
“You didn’t do as bad as most, certainly better than I expected from a fresh recruit. I and the other recruiters will look over the footage from this session and we will update you as soon as we have decided if we are going to approve your candidacy. Good day.”
With that. The man would leave. Donovan would take a seat on the ground. He would leave too… after a short moment of rest...
