Today was the first day of school for both the Kaipo children. Tyson, the tow headed youngest, starting second grade and Amile starting her first year of high school. Okapi, being the over protective type- and having listened to her daughter scream, yell and throw herself about, decided it was best to let the girl attend the private school instead of where she was teaching. Therefore, both had been enrolled in adjoining private schools which were kind enough to take them with late registration- but only after a considerable bribe.
Tyson was chattering away- brimming with excitement, he was a social little boy- a heart breaker in the making, Okapi could not have been more proud of not only his ability to melt hearts but his intelligence. This little boy could quote Poe at the drop of a hat..though- it always every came out, 'Nevermore! Nevermore!'.
Okapi looked over to her daughter, long blond hair having been shoved over her eyes to hide her inner turmoil at having to be walked to school by her mother- and to be seen with her little brother. Amile was a social butterfly away from her family- otherwise it was simply fighting at the top of their lungs, hurt feelings, then large bowls of ice cream and a tear jerking movie...half of which Oki had to pretend to understand but- for Amile, it was worth it.
"Beink seen wit' your mother will not make you unpopular, Amile."
Amile looked up, stared at her mother as if bugs were crawling out her ears- how had she guessed what she was thinking. Okapi smiled at her daughter, who smiled back, blushed and bowed her head to return to her thoughts as they came to the first building of the sectioned school.
Okapi straighted Tyson's jacket, checked his bag, "Do you remember where to go?"
Tyson bobbed his head and breamed pure sunshine, "Yep!"
"Good. Remember: mind your manners, say please, thank you, and don't trade your carrots for ho ho."
Tyson squealed, hugging her waist and laughing, "You're weird, Mamma."
She ruffled, then straightened his hair- it instantly fluffed back into a mess, "Says you. Now go to class. I will be here when school is over."
Tyson nodded, stole a hug from Amile's legs and sped towards the building- instantly greeting several small children around him- instant friends. Tyson turned at the door, "Wait!" Ran back to Okapi, holding out his arms. She bent low and he planted a kiss on her cheek, beamed, "Have a good day, Mamma. I love you!" The little boy then released her neck and sped back to his new friends and classmates.
Okapi was a bundle of smiles as they walked around the corner, Amile seeming to be in one of her usual moods- they were silent all the way to the next building.
They both stopped at the gated half of the school. This side was for high schoolers. Several cliques hung about- none really watching- though Amile was noticed already by a few who passed them. Okapi smiled at her daughter, going through a small grooming process- moving the hair from her daughter's eyes and picking lint form her lapel.
"Such beautiful a face should not be hidden behind your hair. You'll break many boys hearts here ya?"
Amile smiled, despite her hatred of these habits of her mother, "Yeah...I guess, Mom."
"Just remember deal: Studies first, boys second. You still have the letter of recommendation?"
Amile nodded, "In my bag. And I promise not to give away my celery for chocolate."
Okapi laughed, "That's my girl. Now go have a good day. I want you home by five- if not, call cell."
Amile's eyes got big- "You mean I'm not grounded?"
"What kind of mother lets her daughter go to school on her first day grounded? Is Mamma that mean?"
Amile shook her head, "No- you're not! When'd you get so cool though?"
Okapi shrugged, held out a small package, "When I bought this."
Amile took the package and with an enthusiasm, ripped it open to reveal the brand new, top of the line iphone. She shrilled, "OH MY GOD!" and wrapped her arms around her mother's shoulders and hugged her, "の母ありがとう!"(Mother, thank you!)
"You are welkome, now off to class. Must learning in store for today."
Amile squealed, tucked her phone in the inner pocket of her jacket, hugged her mother again with a whopping kiss on her cheek and wandered inside to meet the people who she'd be spending the next four years with.
Okapi didn't watch her daughter go in, and with a quick wipe of misty eyes, pulled out a list. Time to go shopping for the things the house needed- and the empty refrigerator was pining for.

Okapi hummed, now stuck in a store- what a terrible place. Open air markets were far better than this. She put a bag of tomatoes into her cart and continued along. Reading the lists her children had provided- which oddly included something called an X-Box360 and a laptop. She cocked an eyebrow, saying aloud, "Is laptop kind of food?"
