Leif stopped at that, and her eyes cut slightly as she looked at Drake. It wasn't what she was expecting when she asked that question, and she couldn't help but feel like she had stumbled upon something. She wasn't sure quite what to say in response to that.
"That's... rough..."

"Yeah, it was shitty. But honestly, that's a tragedy that has been open, dealt with, and moved on from. The only thing that could've fixed what's left died before the world ended."
He said with a shrug as he smoked the cigarette.

At least he seemed to have come to terms with everything that happened to him. It wasn't an easy thing, she was sure, and she had no way to determine if he was actually satisfied with how it turned out.
"It feels like a lot of things just... sort of concluded with the world ending. I'm glad you got some kind of closure, before it all."

"Heh... actually that closure turned out to be harder to accept than the actual abuse itself."
He said taking another puff.
"The whore house, the only home I had ever known, was burned down, and all the women in it, the only family I had ever had, died in the fire."
He would reach up and touch his scarf.
"This is all I have left of them now."

She turned to look at his scarf, and she nodded.
"Its a beautiful scarf," she murmured quietly. She seemed a bit withdrawn - MORE withdrawn, anyway - after his story, as if her own demons were playing games with her heart and her mind.

"Thanks..."
He inhaled more smoke.
"Anyways, sorry bout that boring ass delve into my past. What's your story?"

"Probably the same as most people from Cabal. Way too large family, military school, drugs and booze, and the war..."
She snickered, the sound bitter and almost cruel. "They put together a group of us, based on our ability potential. Said we were like the spec ops, that it was some huge honor. We were all kids, still. Adults, but kids. We fought and fought, and the last mission before we were supposed to go home... It was a suicide mission."
Leif took a deep drag of her cigarette, staring out at the ocean. Her shoulders were tense with the memory. "My team decided to leave. I didn't. Carried the Cabal flag into the village. Alone."
Her tone was monotonous, unaffected, distant... but her body had tensed. The moment she said village, she shuddered, almost violently, continuing to stare at ocean and its waves, as if somehow, it could soothe the demons.

"They abandoned you? Your own squad?"
He asked with an edge to his tone. As he stared at her with a fire in his eyes.

"Yep. They tried to come up with some kind of plan to get away with avoiding the mission altogether. I... didn't. I said I was going to keep on course, do what I needed to do. Us abandoning our mission was going to lead to more people dying. INNOCENT people dying."
She sighed and leaned her head back, closing her eyes.
"Didn't care. They'd rather save their own skins than protect the lives of the innocent. I wasn't there for glory or fame... I was there to fight for my people, to keep them safe. So... I ended up facing it alone."

Drake's fist were clenched, he was enraged.
"I don't stand for that patriotic shit... I don't really support it either... but abandoning your teammate on the battlefield, even if you didn't like them... that's detestable."

She gave a little shrug.
"These were people I fought with, trained with, defended... We had all known each other since we were teens. To be honest with you, I don't think they didn't like me. We didn't have the opportunity to not like each other... We were battle buddies."
Which just made the betrayal even worse. These people loved her, or at least she thought they did, and they still left her to die alone.
"They didn't like the implications of the mission... There was such a low survival rating, and they didn't bother telling us any of that until the night before, when we had the chance to write home."

"Then they are worse than scum."
He spat.

Her shoulders slowly rose, her entire body tensing, and she turned to Drake with the beginnings of a fire in her eyes.
"They were my friends," she murmured softly, an edge to her tone. She didn't disagree, necessarily, but hearing somebody insult them still put her on the defense.

"And they abandoned you. Fuck their reasons and their fears. At the end of the day they left you to die because not ONE of them had even and inkling of courage or even honor, to stand beside you. Fuck, I wouldn't do or agree with a suicide mission either, but I wouldn't abandon someone to do it alone!"
He countered.

"They did abandon me," she murmured, her voice still that quiet, low tone as she stared at Drake. "And, in a way, that gives me a right to call them whatever name I want to. You have your right to your opinions, but don't call my friends names. We can sit here and discuss how fucked up what they did was all day long, if it comes to it, but keep the name calling to a minimum. If you'd be so kind."
Despite everything and all of the years of running, it was obvious Leif still felt some degree of loyalty... perhaps not to Cabal, but at least to the kids she had grown up with while there.
