Description of style: Form of kickboxing which originated in Myanmar (Burma). Lethwei is in many ways similar to its siblings from neighboring Southeast Asian countries such as Tomoi from Malaysia, Pradal Serey from Cambodia and most of all Muay Thai from Thailand. If Thai Boxing is the science of 8 limbs, then Lethwei can be called the science of 9 limbs, due to the allowance of head butts. In comparison, Lethwei can be interpreted as being bolder and more extreme. The Kachin variant of Lethwei is referred to as soft (relaxed). There is very little wasted motion or effort. Lethwei matches usually start in long range with kicks to the legs and raking punches to the face in an effort to draw blood. As the match continues, the fighters often end up in a clinch and the primary techniques used are standing grappling coupled with various takedowns and sweeps. The preferred finishing techniques are head-butts, elbows, and knees. The Kachin Practitioner generally prefers to fight from the clinch and tends not to fall after missing with a long distance strike, opting instead to follow low line kicks and raking punches into close range.
History Information
History:
The son of an American military colonel and a Guyanese embassy worker, Russell Lauren Bassett has the early years of his life travelling the globe with his parents. At the age of five, his father took him to a martial arts tournament, in which R.L. took an immediate interest in various Kickboxing styles.
Fortunately for him, his father had a friend who was proficient in the Kachin style of Lethwei, and took his son on as a pupil. R.L. proved to be a fast learner, becoming a master of the Lethwei style by the age of fourteen, as well as his father's grappling style (which he called Indiscriminate Manhandling). At the age of fifteen, R.L.'s father retired after 20 years in the military and settled down in California.
About a month into attending high school, R.L. transfers to P.S. 259, following his expulsion from his previous high school. The reason for his expulsion was that he sent three members of the varsity football team to the hospital when the star quarterback thought R.L. was making a move on his girlfriend. With his skills in Lethwei as well as being borderline psychotic in fighting certain people, R.L. attacked and defeated all challengers.
Luckily, his father had some ties with 259 and was able to get R.L. transferred. Promising his father that he would try and stay out of trouble, R.L. heads for his new school. It is certain that with both his martial arts skills and high IQ, he will gain allies as well as enemies.
