Prologue
Beautiful girl in black and white,
Standing alone in the darkest night.
A mask on her face, a blade in her hand,
Herself in the darkness is where she stands…
Chapter One
Standing alone outdoor while droplets of rain began pouring down, Erin Park stood still next to the swing-set, drenched with the cool liquid. Some passing by people wondered what she was doing alone at this time of night, while others merely shook their heads at her. The thunder roared across the sky, and the lightning struck on the Earth’s precious soil, yet Erin stood her ground… Waiting…
For who?
Who would Erin wait for in the rain that she would be drenched and soaking wet? Who would Erin wait for to tell him something so important, yet he didn’t show up? It was him she waited for. Him.
Andrew Kim.
Age. Seventeen.
The two have been going out since the sixth grade - their everlasting love for each other always pulling through, except these past couple of months. They’ve been meeting each other less frequently, talking less and less on the phone, yet she still longed for him. Still loved him.
But she knew she couldn’t have him.
Giving a soft sigh, the blue eyed girl made her way back home, shuffling her feet as she slowly made it to her house in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, pushing the door open as a wave of heat flowed out of the house. Her knuckles were ghost white as her fingers were still tightly grasped around her cell phone. A saddened expression was placed on her face as she quickly changed clothes and laid back on her bed, staring at her phone as she quickly texted him a short and blunt message.
“IT’S OVER.”
Her thumb hovered over the send button as she quickly thought it over. Was this for the best? For him, yes, it was, but not for her. And because her love for him was always so strong, a part of her screamed to not send it, but her thumb twitched, pressing down on the send key as a pop up with a smiley face entered the small screen on her phone.
Message Sent!
If only she was as happy as the screen… If only…
Of course, she didn’t want to break up with him, oh goodness no! But she had no choice.
You know what they say about long distance relationships - they don’t work. That is, unless you're really devoted, which she wasn't sure if she was or not... She was confused.
All around her room were suitcases filled with clothes. She was transferring to Korea for the remaining education - she was going off to Seoul University…in four hours.
In a depressing mood, she stared at her phone, expecting it to ring. If it was one thing she knew about Andrew, it’s that he’ll always call after a text message. Always.
And it rang.
She stared at her phone - should she answer it, or should she ignore it? A hard decision. She didn’t want to say goodbye, but at the same time, she knew she had to. So answering the phone without speaking, she waited for him to talk up first.
“Erin…?”
His voice was weak, and soft, and he gave a quiet laugh thinking this was all some sick, twisted joke. You could hear him choking on his words, and Erin bit down on her tongue to keep herself from crying.
“Let’s break up.”
She was straight forward with it, but she didn’t want to drag this conversation. She didn’t want to cry to him over the phone. She didn’t want him to suffer… There are plenty of other prettier girls out there anyway. Besides, who would want to date her? She was a half. A mix. Korean and French. No one liked her.
No one but him.
“Why? Did I do something wrong? Erin, talk to me!”
She could imagine him crying, endless tears flowing out of his beautiful deep brown eyes. And silently, hot tears rolled down her cheek, and she clenched her fist, digging her nails into her palm to keep her from sobbing.
“…Wait for me…”
When Erin turned eight, they found a small tumor dangerously near her heart. The doctors weren’t able to perform surgery because of it, but as years passed by, they decided it was time to put her under the mask.
She had a Forty-five percent chance of living.
Erin had little under half way to live, and once her surgery was complete and she was still alive, she would return back to Illinois to reunite with her boyfriend.
The two were a special case - no matter how many fights they got in, they fixed it through talking. The couple were mature for their age, which wasn’t much of a surprise.
“Erin? What are you talking about?! Erin!!”
Tears continued to naturally flow out of her eyes. Erin was one who usually never cried, only crying once every four years or so - she was a strong girl mentally wise, and physically wise. Problem is, she didn’t look like it.
“Two years… I know I’m asking for a lot, but wait for me… Just for two years.”
There was silence, and Andrew gave a frustrated sigh over the phone.
“…It’s about your tumor, isn’t it?”
Erin remained silent over the phone, ready to hang up on him until he continued to talk.
“Oceans apart, day after day, and I slowly go insane… I hear your voice, on the line… But it doesn’t stop the pain… If I see you next to never… …How can we say forever…”
Erin placed a hand over her mouth from letting her sobs loose. He was singing for her. He never sang, even though he had a beautiful voice, he never sang. The only time he ever sang for her was when he first asked her out. Beautiful? Yes. Their first meeting started with a song, and their last meeting ends with one…
“Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you.”
Erin’s vision got blurry with tears, remembering past memories of the smallest little things that meant so much for her. Like when a four year old dropped his ice cream, and Andrew offered to give his to him. Or when she fell on her bike in the seventh grade, and he carried her all the way home…
“I took for granted, all the time… That I thought would last somehow… I hear the laughter, I taste the tears… But I can’t get near you now… Oh can’t you see it baby, you’ve got me going crazy…”
He had such a beautiful voice. He could be a singer if he wanted to, yet he chose to stay by her side. She remembered the two in their Freshman year, already picking out names for their future children, how many they’ll have, how big their house will be, what the jobs will be…
“Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you… Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you. I wonder how we can survive…this romance… But in the end, if I’m with you, I’ll take the chance….!”
She remembered the time during their Sophomore year, the two got into a fight, yet he made it up to her by announcing to the entire school on the head speaker, apologizing, which he ended up getting a months worth of detention for.
“…Wherever you go, whatever you do… I will be right here waiting for you… Whatever it takes… Or how my heart breaks… I will be… Right here waiting…for you…”
Erin kept her hand over her mouth as the phone was placed next to her ear.
“Bye Erin…”
“Bye…”
She hung up, and for the first time, she realized how much he meant to her.
“I guess what they say is true… You never know how much something is worth until you lose it.”
Her voice was barely a whisper, giving a small sigh before wiping the remaining of her tears with the back of her hand. Getting up, she looked at all her luggage that would be sent to Korea during the first week she’s there.
“Erin!!”
And that was her cue to go. Picking up the Jansport backpack, she slung it around her shoulders as she left everything else in her room, making her way downstairs.
It was time to go to the airport.
Once there, she said her goodbyes to her parents and gave them hugs and kisses. The pale girl with aquatic blue eyes made her way inside the plan as they called out her seating range, and sat down next to the window, and sighed again.
“Only thirteen hours to go…”
