Where Sony Went Wrong
Around November 2006, Sony had released their newest video gaming console known as the "Playstation 3." It was the most highly anticipated product for the Christmas shopping season. However, Sony did not anticipate the low sales because of the $500-$600 price tag that came along with the console. The pricing was the one factor that contributed to such low sales of the Playstation 3.
Sony's justification of the price fell upon deaf ears. Gamers want a console to just play games. This is where Sony went wrong with the Playstation 3; instead of making this console as the primary basis which is to play games, they made this into an entertainment system. The primary function of the Playstation 3 is to play games, not to act as some onmi-potent entertainment system. Why pay an extra few hundred dollars for an additional entertainment system? Sony swayed away from Playstation's primary function and it hurt them severely.
We do not need a built in DVD player whereas a DVD player is more affordable. Sony also explained that the Playstation 3 acts as a computer that can be hooked up to your TV. What's the point in that when one already has a computer hooked up to the world wide web? It provided various unneeded functions while it swayed away from it's prime function, gaming. Games alone, you're only using about 25-30% estimated of the Playstation 3's abilities. Online use utilizes the other half of Playstation's 3 capabilities.
Despite X-Box 360 and its flaws, it had made more sales due to X-Box Live, the assortment of games, and most importantly the lower price tag. Sony needs to learn from their mistakes such as the price tag and sway away from what the Playstation is supposed to do, play games. Adding all these other functions are simply not needed and is a waste of money, resources, and manpower.
They need to take Nintendo's lead. The Wii is at an affordable $250-300. Nintendo focused on the primary function of the Wii, which is just gaming. They didn't add any unneeded functions such as making this some portable entertainment system. Sony can learn a thing or two from Nintendo. If Sony wishes to make a Playstation 4 or 5 in the future, they need not deter from what this console is supposed to do: play video games, nothing more and nothing less.
