Nintendo Wii In Lead
Of all the three next generation video gaming consoles, Nintendo Wii was considered to be the "underdog" of the war between the two titans Microsoft and Sony. Mistakes on the parts of both Microsoft and Sony was an opportunity that Nintendo intelligently capitalized on.
I had written a previous article on Helium just recently on the Sony Playstation 3 and where it went wrong. As a gamer, I can say that Nintendo has little to no flaws with the Wii console. Though in the past, many strongly felt that they should have kept the name "Nintendo Revolution" instead of renaming it the Nintendo Wii.
Despite the odds, the Wii had emerged victorious and is rated the number one next generation console due to these factors:
~ Pricing: $250-300. $200 was the cost of the Nintendo Gamecube when it first came out around early 2002. With the Nintendo Wii, you are getting more than your money's worth. Whereas the X-Box 360 is $300 for the core unit and $400 for the unit with built hard drive with the Playstation 3 has the price tag of $500 for the core unit and $600 for the unit with built in hard drive.
~ Console Size. Nintendo had kept its word having the Nintendo Wii no more than the size of three CD cases. Because of the size, the Wii is easy to carry and transport from one location to another. The X-Box 360 and Playstation 3 consoles are bigger which requiring more space when taken to another location.
~ Backwards Compatibility. Nintendo Wii allows the user to play both Wii and Nintendo Gamecube games. X-Box 360's backwards compatibility is geared to only games that are deemed "bestsellers." It hasn't been established what Microsoft deems are the X-Box bestsellers. Chances are that only a few games could have that rating and would be the only regular X-Box games to function on the 360.
~ Diversity. The Nintendo Wii has something for everybody. They appeal to a whole new field of gamers. Nintendo also geared the Wii to get non-gamers into gaming which was explained during a few interviews. There are numerous genres are games which almost everybody will have something that appeals to him/her.
~ Goodies. One feature of the Nintendo Wii that had received plenty of attention was the online function. Not just any online function, but the function to download twenty years worth of Nintendo games into the Wii for free. Twenty years worth means games for the NES, Famicom, Super NES, Super Famicom, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Color Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Virtual Boy, and Nintendo 64. The accumulative total value of these games sum up to at least four to six figures. Inside the Nitendo Wii lays the souls of twelve different Nintendo consoles.
~ Games. Nintendo Wii has a wide variety of games. However there are a few "stars" of these games such as Super Smash Brothers Brawl, the third installment of the Super Smash Brothers series. The franchise is popular in its own right. What makes SSBB more special is that they worked with Konami and now Solid Snake from the Metal Gear series is one of the characters in the game. Metal Gear fans, rejoice. The other star is the game Red Shadow which utilizes the use of Nintendo Wii's "Nunchuku Controller."
~ Nunchuku Controller. The nunchuku controller is a new concept from Nintendo that was well received. It has a nice design and it's easy on the carpals.
~ Plays games. Nintendo put numerous features into the Wii, but they were all focused on gaming. Unlike Sony with the Playstation 3 with over half the features that are not relevant to the primary function of gaming.
Nintendo had the right idea when making the Wii. The Wii has numerous features which most importantly relevant to gaming. X-Box 360 has a few flaws that cannot be overlooked and the major flaw of the Playstation 3's price tag equals out those flaws. For ones whom want to get a gaming console for themselves, a friend, a family member, or somebody else, the Nintendo Wii is the best way to go.
