The College Level Examination Program or CLEP for short is a type of exam that you can take in lieu of having to take classes. You can look up the CLEPs at www.collegeboard.com. Most to all accredited colleges and universities do have CLEP testing. It provides an opportunity to get class credits faster instead of having to spend months in a college course. CLEPs are available if you already know the stuff and do not wish to take the actual course. There happens to be numerous cases where it's very unnecessary to spend hundreds of dollars for a course that lasts for several months.
You can finish a CLEP up in a day rather than having to finish a course and do all sorts of homework over a span over a span of 3-4 months. CLEP exams cover the various subjects such as English Comprehension, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, History, and so fourth. Just about all the subjects that the CLEPs cover are required to get your AA or AS degree. CLEP exams are definitely a good way to go as it will save a lot of time and money.
For example, I'm not that keen on mathematics. College Algebra is a class you must take and pass in order to obtain your associate's degree. A good deal of College Algebra classes focus a lot on graphing which means you need to have a graphic calculator. Most of those classes that use graphing calculators use Texas Instruments models. Having the wrong graphing calculator will make passing the class very difficult. In this case if you know the stuff and don't feel like doing any graphing, the CLEP is the best way to go.
If you have a bunch of classes you need to pass and do not want to take the time and take the courses, CLEPs are the answer. From what I've heard from other students, taking the CLEPs are far easier then having to take certain classes. At the same time, taking a CLEP is far easier on your wallet.
Also if you're trying to pursue multiple majors or minors, CLEPs are also a good way to pursue them. There are plenty of majors out there that require a lot of dedication meaning you won't have time to get a job nor pursue a secondary major as well. The CLEP should make it easier on you.
To find out more about the CLEP, you can just go to the collegeboard.com and they explain in full detail about the CLEPs and each individual exam. Depending on the school, they charge about $50-60 a test plus the $15 administration fee. For $75, it's not that bad of a deal instead of paying several hundred to a few thousand for a college semester. Keep in mind there are plenty of major classes that the CLEP do not cover. Also if you score low on the CLEP, you're out of a $65-75 and will have to dish out another amount to take the CLEP again.
However, on the website it's listed that military personel both active and reserve are eligible of taking the CLEP exams for free. If the CLEP is not administered within a military base, you'll be responsible for just the administration fee. But still that's not bad because you didn't have to pay for the actual exam. There are plenty of benefits and advantages of taking the CLEP over going to the actual courses. If you want to get your AA in less than four terms, CLEP exams are definitely the way to go.
Think of the CLEP exam of an alternative for going to an actual class. I've had my fill of classes with boring professors who just stand and lecture. In those cases, drop out of the course and take the CLEP.
