If you do not feel like dishing out $50-70 on a new computer game which can get pretty costly, there are some free alternatives to check out. There are "homebrew" games you can download for free. A homebrew game is a game created by people just like you and me. They spend their free time towards creating a bunch of homebrew game mods.
There was one homebrew that had caught my attention called "Beats of Rage." It's basically a remake of the Sega Genesis classic series "Streets of Rage." However, the homebrew mod was created using game sprites from the SNK-Playmore classic, the "King of Fighters" series. If you're familiar with fighting games especially KoF, you should be able to recognize the game sprites.
It was pretty unreal. A friend of mine was pretty shocked when I showed him the link to the website. He was like, "are you kidding me?" I went ahead and downloaded BoR and played it. To say, I wasn't dissatisfied with the game. It's a very good homebrew game and it shows that the creators put forth a good effort with Beats of Rage. Not only is it just a game, it's also a game engine.
Beats of Rage pretty much plays like a typical 2D side-scrolling fighter similar to Final Fight, Double Dragon, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. The graphics are good and the game play is fluid. However, only thing that leaves to be desired is the ability to run and dash. That was the only thing that frustrated me about BoR was the inability to either run or dash.
The current playable characters are:
- Kula Diamond
- Blue Mary (Renamed to Mandy)
- Maxima (Renamed to Max)
When playing any type of fighting game, the ability to run, dash, back dash is extremely invaluable. Especially when you need to escape enemies ganging up on you from left to right. That was the biggest case with me when playing BoR. Everything else about BoR doesn't disappoint. But BoR's only flaw makes the game difficult to play because enemies do tend to gang up on you.
BoR also provides a good techno soundtrack to complement the gameplay and each stage. If you can overlook the inability to run or dash, then BoR is definitely something worth checking out.
You can download a copy of BoR from these websites from:
Senile Team
BOR Revolution
If you enjoy BoR, there are other homebrew mods that use the BoR engine:
- Beats of Rage Remix
- Beats of Rage Xtra
- Hatchet Ninjaz
- Final Fight Apocalypse
- Hyper Final Fight
- Hyper Final Fight 2
- Rhythm of Destruction: Beats of Rage Remix 2(Red, Green, Blue, & SF)
- Street Fighter Victory
- Rage of the Streets
- Luta Final
- Tails Final Fight
- Stains of Deception
- Dante Must Kill
- Kill Bill
- Stains of Deception
- Double Dragon Extreme
- Advance Double Dragon
- Megaman: Battle for the Past
- Crisis Evil
- Crisis Evil 2
- Dragons of Rage
Should you download the different BoR mods, on BOR Revolution, download the most recent version of "openbor." It's the open source version of BoR. Inside, there should be a few folders. Open the Windows folder and click and drag the .pak files into the folder that says "Paks." The pak files are individual game mods.
The mods are in .rar files so you'll need to have WinRar installed. Once you open up the rar files, just extract into the pak folder. Be sure to rename the .pak files because most of the pak files will be named bor.pak. For example if you download Crisis Evil, be sure to rename bor.pak as "crisisevil.pak."
It's pretty simple. All you have to do is click on the openbor icon and play away.
