I've role-played via IM message about once in my life. I really wasn't into the whole thing since I prefer to use instant messaing to talk to people and kick back. Not to implement role-playing. To use IM in a role-playing game such as an MMORPG or a normal online role-playing game, I would recommend X-Fire which is an instant messager specified to be used for online play. I know that X-Fire is used to chat with other people while immersed in a first-person shooter title.
Other than that, I didn't really see any other applications of RPing via an instant messenger. Though I have one friend that does it. I should ask her plenty of questions about the dynamics of RPing through an instant messenger. She IM RPs with another friend of mine from what she told me. I've been on role-playing boards and role-playing chatrooms created on MSN before they started charging to use the chat. Those two types replace the need of taking an RP to IM.
The only cases I saw for an IM RP which I found humorous is if two characters wanted to engage in sexual activity. All normal roleplaying can be done via a message board. If you're actually using a table-top roleplaying game, you're better off with a chatroom instead of an instant messenger. Because all the players are present and plus everything in the chat can be logged versus individual IM where you have no idea what the other people are doing. IMs are usually between two people. Chatrooms are for more than two people. Like an online conference.
RPing via an instant messenger is similar to role-playing on a board or a chatroom. Pretty simple, just make sure you have good quality in your posts. However, most chatrooms and boards will not accept IM RP unless the two of you want to have some in-character sex session, then by all means use an IM RP. Keep in mind most rooms and boards are PG-13 mainly due to a lot of players still being kids and any mature content present is frowned upon and will most likely get you banned permanantly.
Unless you're going to have some RP sex, an IM RP isn't necessary. Though I do find the concept pretty humorous.
