Your kidding, right? When I first say this article, I just shook my head. I had to, I really just had to shake my head. I don't mean to offend anyone with this opening statement, but are you serious? But then again, not many people can tell if someone is gay or not. One prime example was the first episode of "The Real World - Philadelphia." There were two gay men on the cast, Willie and Kuramo. Willie was the more feminine one while Kuramo was the more masculine one.
There are two definitions of gay. First one is extreme happiness. Such as a very gay celebration meaning a celebration of happiness. The other meaning is attracting to someone of the same gender. I'm guessing this article topic is focused towards the ladder of the two meanings.
The two other guys MJ and Landon who happen to be white and straight didn't even think Kuramo was gay. But Willie was a dead giveaway. But you can't always go by how a person acts and dresses. A perfect analogy is not to judge a book by its cover. Assumption is the mother of all screw ups. Basically, you have to get all the facts straight. Kuramo was very masculine and he dressed in jeans, shirts, boots, etc. Nobody could tell that he was gay. This black woman named Lashonda on the cast didn't think Kurama was gay.
Then she got a bit suspicious when they talked about interracial relationships. Became Lashonda was mainly in interracial relationships. I think Lashonda got suspicious when the conversation went into same sex relationships. In the testimonial, Kuramo admitted he was gay. When Kuramo, MJ, and Landon hung out that same night, Kuramo talked about how gay bars and clubs aren't like what people portray them to be. MJ and Landon got suspicious and they straight up and asked Kuramo is he was gay.
Kuramo admitted he was gay. The gay male stereotype was broken. MJ and Landon were shocked. But they didn't care. They didn't mind that Kuramo was gay. In fact, they still got along just fine. In the past we were pretty fixated on the gay male stereotype that we're automatically assuming who's gay and who's not. I remember working at this restaurant for the summer of '03 because I needed the money and there's no calls for substitute teaching until August. There was this one waiter who was training us and he had feminine qualities.
But he was straight. Of course there are gay males that act very feminine and gay females that act very masculine. But we can't assume by the way they act or dress alone. Most of the time we can assume right but we won't assume right one-hundred percent of the time. Not only is assuming the mother of all screw ups but you could be treading on dangerous ground. So, don't assume. If they're talking about hanging out at a gay bar or same-sex relationships, just politely ask if they're gay or not.
There's no harm in it. We tend to assume because it's easy and convenient. If they're gay, then ok, move on. If they're not gay, then ok, and move on. The most common stereotype about homosexuality is that if a person's gay that s/he will come onto you in an instant. But I'm going to have to dispel that myth. If you're a guy, it doesn't automatically mean a gay guy is going to hit on you. Same with females. There are rare cases where the gay person doesn't care if you're straight. It's those rare cases that tend to bring a lot of persecution to the gay community with severe consequences.
We really can't one-hundred percent tell if a person is gay or not. Only thing you can do is ask. It'll clear up a lot of air.
I have a friend who's married with a wife. He took up a night job as a bouncer for a gay bar. From what he told me, it was very nice. That's from a straight guy's perspective. It shows that you can't neccessarily tell if a guy is gay if he's talking about gay bars.
If you're gay, then you're gay. Nothing complicated about it. If you're a female and attracted to females, you're gay. If you're a male and you're attracted to other males, then you're gay. If you're attracted to both, you're bi-sexual. Samantha from Sex in the City quoted in one episode "I'm a try-sexual, I'll try anything once."
Nothing wrong with being gay. The people that preach that being gay is wrong are people that want to use religion to ascend themselves into power. So just ignore those people. I have plenty of gay friends that are both masculine and feminine. Same with my bisexual friends.
Don't know how simplify it anymore. If you like people of the same gender, that's proof enough that you're gay. If you think someone is gay, don't assume, just quietly ask them. And for the love of all is holy, don't go asking in an area where people can get an earfull. If the person tells you s/he is gay and wants you to keep it a secret for the time being, don't be a jerk and blurt it out.
Basically, if a guy takes on feminine qualities, it doesn't mean that he's gay. Same with a girl taking on masculine qualities, it doesn't mean that she's gay.
Finally if you're gay, accept it. Don't ever let anyone think that being gay is wrong. Actually, before the spread of religions like Christianity, it said that homosexuality was the purest love. In the Feudal Era of Japan, it said that same-sex relationships tended to be more noble than heterosexual relationships.
