I personally have never had a problem with dining alone. Only reason I'm dining with a group of people is just to hang out some, that's all there is to it. I never really understood why a person gets insecure about eating alone. Maybe that person hasn't been by him or herself for awhile. Learning how to gracefully dine alone is a good start in learning to be by oneself a bit more often.
Gracefully dining alone isn't as hard as you can think. Many people dine alone at a restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You just basically relax and act casual. Everybody else wants to have a nice meal and relax. Doesn't matter where you eat at. I worked at this Vietnamese restaurant for my summer job back in 2003 and we've had people that dined alone without feeling insecure.
This one guy dined alone casually while the rest of his family went out somewhere. One of my homeboys visited the restaurant one time and he dined by himself. He didn't care if he was by himself. There's plenty of places I've been to where I dined by myself. Did I care, not at all. Personally, I find dining alone to be a pretty peaceful experience.
The only people I tend to enjoy eating out with are my friends. I don't like eating out with my relatives much because I don't like them bugging me much. When you're eating out, the host usually asks how many people, you answer one, and the host will ask if you want to sit at the bar or at a table. Doesn't matter. I should sit at the bar next time because I'm much closer to the alcohol and the bartender could whip me up something fast instead of waiting for a the server to bring me my drink.
I really don't care where I dine alone. When I was in Washington DC for family and business back in December, I had eaten at this restuarant called Thai Chili at the Verizon Center. I wanted to try something new and it was near the movie theater which was located on the third floor. First time I dined by myself in years. It was a pretty peaceful experience without any of my family members let alone my mom telling me not to order so much alcohol.
Especially after being on my feet from nine o'clock in the morning until seven or eight o'clock at night, I relished the peace of mind I get from dining alone. And the food was good. I can enjoy the food without people bugging me. When there's nobody bugging me, I can eat my dinner in peace.
I even go to a few buffets by myself. Hardly anybody around during the daytime as the pizza place mainly do deliveries. But, I don't care. Everybody's minding their own business.
Remember, restaurant workers aren't supposed to alienate you. Restaurants are businesses. Meaning your money is as good as couples or other groups of people dining at the same place. Besides, there are going to be other people probably dining alone as well.
The big steps in gracefully dining alone is being at peace with yourself and being comfortable with yourself.
