The question is, why do you want to be emo in the first place for?! Before you want to learn how to be emo, you have to know what the term "emo" really is. There are numerous meanings on being emo. Emo can be a state of mind, appearance, music, etc. I've been talking to a bunch of friends with their own different ideas of being emo.
Emo can be short for "emotional." Her definition of being emo is if the world does not pity your existance while at the same time praising you for your ingenious way of silent and violent rage against "the man" you always seem depressed. Pretty good definition and that could probably sum of "emo" as a mental state.
So if you feel that way, then you're already an emo. Meaning, you don't need to learn how to be emo. You're pretty much already there. You're just there, my friends. Well according to my friend Mouse who had summed up that definition of being emo.
She also added that their style of clothing can be pretty disgusting. My friend Ally commented that being emo can also be a style of clothing. Examples on looking "emo" range from dark clothing, lots of eyeliner, never smiling, and talking with a morbid monotonous voice. Pretty much coincides with what my friend Mouse said about their sense of clothing. Mouse added that they can be pretty "creative" with their clothing.
In a nutshell, she said that emos are sold out punk goths. I have plenty of friends whom are former punk goths back in high school none of them had gone emo. Back when I was in high school, the term emo never existed. If you're a sold out punk goth, you're already emo. Meaning, you don't need to learn how to be emo.
Another way on how to be emo is if people ignore you, you can try harder to get their attention with "drama." If you're one of those types of people, you're automatically emo. Meaning, you don't have to learn how to be emo.
Also, another friend gave me a link to a website that gives another definition of emo. It's defined as an umbrella term that covers various styles of emotionally-charged punk rock or emo-punk rock. Like "emocore", "emo", "hardcore emo", "post-emo indie rock", "post-emo hardcore", and "screamo." If you play that type of music, in a sense you're emo. But those types of music have been around for quite awhile. In a sense you could be "emo" then again it wouldn't make you "emo."
Another definition on being "emo" is inflicting injury upon yourself by cutting, burning, mutilation, and what not. From what I learned, it's supposed to be "cool" in this subculture of emo. So, if you're the type to do that because it makes you look cool, then yeah, you're "emo."
What makes a lot of sense is today's emo is considered to be a pathetic former shell of what it once was. Another portrayal of being "emo" today is being a teenager that's getting all melodramatic to get the attention of others, pitying the self when others won't pity him/her, and writing very bad poetry as a result. They think they have very harsh lives while in reality, most of them have much better than everybody else.
If you fall into that criteria, then you're already "emo."
The blunt, brutal, but honest truth is that members of this sad personification of this culture known as "emo" are basically people who have no "real" problems.
