Should the government control talk radio to make it more 'balanced'? Questions like that are the sparks that give people some ideas. The government taking control to make it more balanced? Yeah, right. The government itself is far from being what the definition of 'balanced.' What really is considered to be 'balanced' in the first place? The definition differs from person to person let alone from one group to another.
The Republicans have their own ideas of what balanced means. The Socialists have their own ideas of what balanced means. Democrats have their own ideas of what balanced means. The list of groups with their own interpretations of balanced is near infinite. Also keep in mind that not everybody listens to talk radio.
Take the Don Imus Show that was simultaneously broadcasted on NBC and CBS for instance. I had never listened to that show in any point of my life. Yet the African-American community and the various colleges got into an uproar when Don Imus made that derogatory remark to the girls' basketball team at Rutgers. I can definitely tell that most if not all of them do never even listened to the Don Imus Show ever. I doubt the girls' basketball team players listen to talk radio let alone the Don Imus show.
Only reason this incident sparked was due to someone uploading that segment of Imus making the remark on YouTube. That was the only reason. If nobody had done it in the first place, then this incident would probably have been nonexistant.
That's just an example on how most people do not tune into talk radio let alone political talk radio. The only reason I turn on the radio is for music, nothing more and nothing less. If there's nothing good playing, then I'll probably listen to a few talk shows every now and then. Should the government take control, wouldn't affect people as much. Most people tune to political shows on CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, etc instead of listening to some talk radio show.
If I want some political commentary, I'll tune into CNN.
There's really no point for the government to interfere. With the political news shows, they're already self-regulated. It's obvious that FOX News is very right-winged. But the other news networks act as a counterbalance such as CNN and MSNBC. Bill O'Reilly from the "O'Reilly Factor" is constantly bashed by Keith Oberman on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Oberman."
I only have about two worries on the thought of government taking control of talk radio. First off is the control of the government. If the government is right-winged, then a lot of the left-wing talk radio shows would probably be taken off the air. Vice-versa if the government is left-winged. One would probably relish the thought. But you'd be hearing too much of the same thing if that happens. If I want to hear what the other side is talking about it wouldn't be possible.
My other worry is that government control could seep onto TV and start regulating all the TV news shows. That's the one thing that we should be worrying about. From TV news shows, the government could possibly expand its control into daily television taking away all the TV shows, cartoons, movies, and everything else because it's not right-winged nor left-winged enough. That is a strong possibility.
From there, government could possibly expand to the internet. We can excercise our freedom of speech openly on the internet. It's the one place where you can easily reach millions of people nationwide and worldwide. When you ask questions such as this topic, you have to think about the long term effects it would present. As a possibility, we wouldn't be posting on Helium.
There's always problems when the government intervenes with things they shouldn't be intervening in the first place. So far, all the government knows how to do is complicate things. In short it's a Pandora's Box that shouldn't be even opened in the first place.
