There are so many ways a person can be a civil liberties activist. You really do not have to look that hard to find the right information and so forth. You can do this part-time or full-time if you want. To do it part-time, all you need to do is just simple stuff such as print out literature and pass them out. That's the first thing. Pass out literature such as putting them on top of car windows and on top of mailboxes. Don't put them inside the mailboxes though because it's against the law.
Literature drops is one way to do it. At the same time it gives you good grassroots political experience. Do not underestimate the potential of grassroots politics. The next best thing would be start your own blog with your political views and so forth. Blogs are very common nowadays. Many people seem to have their own blogs now. With an online blog, you're more likely to reach out to a wide audience of people. It's the best way to reach out. You can knock out a hundred houses in a day. Online with a blog, you can reach a million households in a day.
This is the best way to be a civil liberties activist from the comfort of your own home. If you're in high school, start a high school student group. Find a high school student group in your area. If you're in college, there are plenty of student groups you can join. Do not underestimate the power of student groups. During the march early this year demanding DC residents get the right to vote, there were many student groups taking part in the city-wide march.
There's always donating to various advocacy groups. Those groups rely on all sorts of funding in order to survive. A good number of that funding comes from donations. Keep in mind that donations are tax write-offs. It's mutually beneficial on both sides.
Those are the several methods you could be a part-time to full-time civil liberties activist. Writing arctics on Helium that talk about civil liberties is a way one can be a civil liberties activist. By writing this one article, I can be considered a civil liberties activist.
You can attend a few protests to show that you're a civil liberties activist. For something more advanced, you can join a political campaign. Joining a political campaign was the one thing that got me hooked on civil liberties activism. I was working the John Kerry campaign around 2004 and saw how unorganized and unprepared they were. Yet there were more registered Democrats than there are Republicans in the county I currently live in. I was displeased on how some of the people were running the operation.
You can volunteer to work the campaign. I've met some many great and interesting people that came all the way from different states just to volunteer. That's one good way to get into civil liberties activism. That way you can get introduced to all sorts of civil rights groups. You can get very active during an election year. Then again each year is a sort of an election year for govenors, mayors, senators, representatives, board members, and so forth. You'll bound to find something that will get you active in the field of civil liberties.
If you're an actor, you can get a bunch of other actors around and come up with a bunch of political skits.
If you're a comedian, create some political material. More and more comedians are getting very political nowadays. John Stewart is very political. Carlos Mencia is pretty political. Al Franken is very political. Many comedians are following their leads.
If you're a songwriter, write a song about it. More music artists are getting very political as well.
If you're an artist, create some artwork geared towards civil liberties.
The possibilities are endless.
