History Information
History:
Homo Sapiens, also known as humans, are creatures of nature, just like any other species of kindom Animalia. Birth, eat, sleep, breath, reproduce, age, die, decay. Instinct drives us to pursue the fundamentals of life and species proliferation. However, there is one thing that sets humans apart from other creatures, and that is the ability to reason. The ability to mentally form concepts such as right and wrong and distinguish between them. The ability to write music and fantastic tales, and also to comprehend these and other sorts of delicate, seemingly unneccesary fluff that men and women create. The idea to look beyond the individual, beyond the immediate surroundings, and also the ability to look deep within, that is to be human.
Why humans possess such a trait when other animals do not is much speculated upon by religion and science. It is called 'original sin' in Christian and Jewish teachings. In that oldest of old stories, it was the fate of Eve and then Adam to be gifted with this quality by disobeying God and eating of the 'Tree of Life,' at the urging of the serpent, Satan. Their punishment was to be turned out of the paradise of Eden, and to work the soil for sustenance, and to bear offspring through pain and suffering.
Science, as of yet, cannot even confirm or deny conclusively the existence of a god or gods of any sort, let alone the credibility of this somewhat fanciful story. They instead choose a more pragmatic route for examining the question of human reason. Specifically, it is believed that the answer lies in the brain and in genetics.
One particularly well formed theory states that a genetic mutation is the source of the trait. In short, it is speculated that random mutation in one specific generation, perhaps one single offspring, produced a gene responsible for developing cognitive reasoning abilityes. This trait turned out to be a dominant trait, and eventually the recessive, animal genes were bred out entirely.
This theory is further supported by the idea that the old recessive gene resurfaces occasionally. Chromosomes come in pairs, of course. Your average human has two dominant reasoning genes, BB. The original, beastial humans had double recessive genes, bb. What happens when you have one of each: Bb? It is possible that such a person would show no evidence of the recessive trait, as it would be dominated by the other. However, it is possible that a dichotomy would be produced in the person's nature: extreme humanity and intelligence at times, extreme beastlike behavior at others, the degree of this would be based largely on surroundings and development on an individual basis.
Some societies in the past seem to have been full of such genetic combination. The Aztecs, for example, were mathematically well developed, they had a 365 day calendar and made precise astronomical calculations, made great works of art and built magnificent structures. However, they also violently sacrificed members of their own people and performed other atrocities. It may be that everyone of that people had one dominant and one recessive gene.
More proof exists for this theory than just guesswork about ancient peoples. There is also Alice.
Alice was born into a loving family who were not rich, but not struggling either. She exhibited strange bouts of uncalmable wild behavior as a toddler, but her parents figured that it was a phase and she would grow out of it, and she was quite a brilliant child at any other time. One day, she went berzerk in a classroom and wrecked the place, so they were forced to acknowledge that something was amiss.
Upon examination and study, it was determined by leading doctors and scientists that her behavior followed exactly what was predicted by the theoretical model above. She was admitted to a psychiatric ward, where she was observed at all times, and had to be escorted by orderlies when out of her room. By no means was she mistreated or kept holed up; on the contrary, she had the best education and recreation opportunities available anywhere.
Alice was a remarkably brilliant child, and faced frustration due to a lack of intellectual challenge with her educational material. She filled that particular gap in her life with creative hobbies, such as painting, construction toys like Legos, and music. She is now an accomplished pianist and organist due to massive amounts of practice and passion put into the instrument. For the times when she could not find something to mentally stimulate herself with, physical extra-curricular activities such as gymnastics, acrobatics, and martial arts were the stuff of choice, losing herself in mind-numbing exercise. Her episodes of switchover are not frequent, and are brought on by intense emotion for the most part.
Finally, as Alice reaches the age where most kids attend high school, doctors developed a medicine from studying her that would act to suppress her condition to a degree satisfactory enough that she would be allowed to live a regular life. Thrilled, her parents send her to a certain highly acclaimed PHS in the area for her reinsertion into free society.
