Halloween.
Emily never really did much for this holiday, as she had been deprived of such childish occasions in her childhood. The Aoyamas were pretty strict about the consumption of candy, nor did she have a sweet tooth to actually yearn for such things.
To Emily, who was raised in the mindset of people in the political-medical field, candies were good occasionally -- but the amount that halloween lets in would give her candy that would last a year.
Though, it was an experience she probably should -- no, definitely should try.
Well, maybe she should knock at Layla's door tonight and see if she could borrow some costumes, or at least some good materials to make one.
She had a week -- what would she come up with?

"Ooooh! May I take your picture?"*Click Click*"Please pose for me, nee-san!"*Click click click*"Every house is like this..." Emily exasperated softly, posing for candy. Well, it couldn't be helped. Who wouldn't want to take a picture with such a well-made costume and such a pretty cosplayer?
"This feels slightly awkward..." A simple trick-or-treat had become something like a cosplayer being hoarded by interested otakus. It was just in Emily's luck that most of the houses she ended up going to were filled with otakus to last her a lifetime.
Well, at least, the candy was nice. The last two houses she had been on were otakus, but they had pretty interesting candies -- or at least, candy replacements. They more or less ran out of candies and left the remaining few for the actual kids. In the candy's stead, she was given pastries -- which, in Emily's view, were to her favor. She liked pastries a lot and this was nice.
Her next stop was a normal-looking house in the corner the street.
"Trick or treat!" She greeted, a smile on her face. Her basket was awkwardly filled with pastries, and seeing that -- others followed too. That house gave her freshly baked bread -- raisin bread, to boot.
An hour into the trick or treating and Emily was getting hungry. A little bite wouldn't hurt right? Taking a little croissant from her bag, she sat at the bench by the sidewalk, eating her little meal happily.
Boy, this was going to be a pretty tough night. She wanted candy, but she got bread, and all sorts of pastries instead. How unusual!
But yes, it was a nice thing to get in the long run. She and Miria would have great breakfast for the entire week thanks to this -- but the basket was already getting quite full and heavy, so after a bit of pondering, Emily went for a little detour and headed home to drop off the pastries.
Two hours, thirty minutes.
This was officially Emily's eighth house.
"Trick or treat!" She said. An old woman greeted her with a smile, but the smile faded away quickly.
"Oh, I'm sorry. But I'm out of candy." She explained,
"The last set of kids took them all."Emily nodded,
"Ah, I see. It's alright though. Thanks!" She smiled at the old lady before turning around to leave.
"Wait! Here. Have this." The old lady dropped a pretty heavy bag onto the basket. Why, it was Mochiko, an ingredient used for making Dango. Emily used to like that stuff when she was still living in Japan. It was a staple when she went to festivals, and had to bug Rem a lot to buy her several sticks of them.
This would be useful in making Takoyakis too.
"I got this from my son who has this place at the festival." The lady explained,
"I don't like japanese food... so you can have it. You seem like the type to like it."Oh dear.
Emily bowed lightly, careful to not let the glass wings hit the old lady.
"Ah, thank you. I appreciate this.""Any time, dear! Have fun."And the door finally closed.
Two hours. It's already ten in the evening, and Emily was already getting tired -- not to mention, hungry again.
Ah... time for another bread-break.
Emily actually got a bit of candy off the previous ones, but probably only enough to last her a few weeks. Guess people were being more generous and decided to give something a little healthier instead?
... or maybe it's because of the age thing: Candy is for kids.
Oh bother.
Emily sat down again on a bench, and opened a bag of fish sticks. It didn't take a while before she hear something.
Mewls.
A kitten?
She went and looked under the bench. Why, it was a stray black cat. It had a wound over it's shoulder and more or less wasn't smelling so good. It was obviously in pain, and hungry.
Pain.
... Pain wasn't good.
A smile as Emily reached out for it.
"There, there. Come with me, I'll take you home and get you fixed up, kay?"The kitten hissed a bit, but winced as it tried to escape. Emily shook her head and quickly took the poor animal into her arms, carrying it home despite the funky odor. The poor thing's wound probably was infected, and it was best to clean it before it gets any worse.
Then when it's better, she'd bring it somewhere to be screened. Well, there's got to be a microchip there somewhere. There was no collar or any identifying tags.
... and it seemed she had a pedigree, look at that thick black fur! It was almost impossible to say that this thing had no owner.
If it had none, then... Emily would be a pretty lucky girl. She'd take it to the vet and all, give it proper care... Well, that was of no importance for now.
Emily took her home.
"Anou... onamae wa... Yami desu ka?" She would ask the little cat, only to realize that she had fallen asleep.
Yami.
Yes, like the night, with eyes of a piercing red.
This Halloween experience was an interesting one indeed.
