Mental Information
Personality: He is cold and reserved. He doesn’t meddle in the affairs of others and enjoys being alone. He does understand the good uses of teamwork and how cooperation can help situations, but he constantly strives to be independent from everyone else, physically, and emotionally. He doesn’t talk often, but he is not rude. He thinks little of himself, but his self esteem is not low; he just always believes that he needs to be stronger or better in many aspects. He dwells on the need to be stronger, not the lack of strength.
Mentality: He has a mentality that he has to be strong enough to fend for himself, as the world is an unforgiving place. He has seen those that cannot help themselves, and it makes him sick. He refuses to be someone like that. This does not mean he is opposed to having friends; he just doesn’t want to need others to get by. He also does not think he is entitled to more than others. He will not take what belongs to others because he is stronger unless he has to too survive. Only the strong can make it. Though he is sometimes reluctant to admit, he has great admiration for sculpture, and participates in the craft himself, and secretly sees this as a way to make himself better, as it gives him time to reflect, and focus on something that is neither necessary nor perfect, but still beautiful in its own way. He is also very confused. He has gone through a lot of psychological problems involving his family. He is in a fragile mental state.
Ideal: He wants a world here everyone is strong enough to help themselves. He will help others get stronger to get here. He is also not opposed to weeding out people who are too weak to survive in this world. If this can be achieved, then he believes those who are left can live in peace with each other, and all will be good.
Belief: He believes in no particular religion, but he follows the ideology of Stav. It is a belief originating from the Germanic population of Scandinavia and Norway. This means that he believes the earth is full of people who are all different, yet equal in their rights. He accepts all, but does not tolerate tyranny. He fights for the world that he believes in. He loves those close to him, and honors his family, and firmly believes that his history, his ancestors, are an integral part of understanding himself..
Physical Information
Build: Hall is tall and very muscular, much like a professional athlete.
Defining Marks: He has a tattoo of a large, circular shield on his back. When asked what it means, he said it is the gift his family gave him. To explain further (Though He rarely does), His name, Hallvardr, is Nordic for “Rock Defender” and is a name that has gone to the second son of every generation in his family since the time of the Vikings.
Description: Hall is tall and muscular, which is fairly intimidating to most onlookers. Much of his appearance can be directly corresponded to that of his Viking ancestors. His hair is normally kept short, only growing out to a medium length around his ears when he doesn’t make time to cut it. His eyes are wearier then most his age, but are still powerful and strong. His face is most often in a very neutral position, so it is hard to see his feelings easily. He wears baggy clothing while in public that help mask his size. He keeps himself clean shaven most often, for he doesn’t believe he is worthy of a full beard. He can also often be seen wearing a baseball cap. He wears a hooded sweatshirt that is grey with navy blue sleeves when it’s cold or raining, and a long-sleeved button up white shirt in most other weather conditions. He wears cargo pants almost all of the time. He wears sneakers as an all occasion shoe, but owns construction boots as well as cleats for his sports. When he trains his muscles or works out, he either wears a sleeveless t-shirt or, no shirt at all, with mesh shorts. When he is practicing his Stav, he has a loose fitting long sleeved shirt and a loose pair of pants that are tied with a chord to keep them up. They are both tan colored, with the chord being brown. He doesn’t wear shoes during this. Generally, all of his clothes are dark earth-toned and white.
Apparel Information
Head Gear: He wears a baseball cap that is either brown, red, or black, all of them worn and faded. He also sometimes wears a hood.
Shirts: Long sleeved white button up, loose fitting long sleeved and tan, or sleeveless and white or navy blue.
Pants: Cargo pants, cargo shorts, or mesh shorts. He seldom wears jeans, but it happens.
Shoes: Sneakers, boots, or cleats
Misc: Tattoo is all black
Fighting Information
Fighting Style:He fights using the Principles of Stav, coupled with street brawling.
Years Practiced: 11 years of Stav without fighting, 6 years of stav with fighting.
Description of style: His fighting style consists of Stav, which is a way of thinking that takes many forms, one of which is combat. It is often called the “European Tai- Chi” for its emphasis on body control, breathing, and balance. Though most training is done with a staff, and prepares one for use of other weapons, the unarmed combat is also very effective. He uses a modified version of Stav, which relies more on his brute strength and constitution to deal damage in a boxing/ street brawling manner, while his training helps him remain balanced and in control. His style relies heavily on his fists and punching and grappling, though it does cal for powerful legs and some occasional kicks or trips.
History Information
History: Hallvardr Egil was born in Scandinavia in a small town near the border to Norway. He was born into poverty, and was sent away with his older brother, Freyr, who was 15 at the time, to live in Canada with their second cousin, who lived in Montreal, so as not to starve their whole family. Soon after they arrived, though, their cousin took ill and told Freyr that they could no longer stay, and that they may have a cousin who live in Maryland in the US. So, Freyr took himself and his brother to Maryland, alone, at the age of 16, and found their great uncle, who allowed them to stay at his home. Thus, before Hall was even 2 years old, he had travelled through several countries and continents to find a place where he could call home. He grew up in that house with his brother and great uncle, learning the ways of Stav from both of his family members. He also grew up with an incredible loathing for his parents, who he thought abandoned him because they didn’t love him. He kept quiet though, letting his anger fester. He saw his brother, working hard to be the main provider for a child and an elderly man, while he was barely able to claim not being a child himself. He also blamed his parents for his brother’s hardships, and assumed his brother did too, but they never openly spoke of those things. He wanted to see his great grandfather as a father figure, but he was old and frail, and, in halls eyes, weak because he openly discussed his problems, and he asked for help, and took handouts from neighbors. Even at his young age, hall was full of arrogant pride.
When Hall was 12, his great uncle passed away unexpectedly in his sleep, and custody of him went to his brother. There uncle left them little in his last will. All they received were some old letters from distant family and files about his lineage. They didn’t even get the house, which was given to the bank so as to finish paying off any debts the old man had acquired, so the boys were on the move again, but now with some time and experience under their belts. They wound up moving to Georgia, where they rented a small, dirty apartment with three rooms. At this point Halls anger was starting to spill over into his school and social life. He had few friends, and most kids found him scary to be around, so it was hard for him. He never complained, though. In his mind, if his brother could suffer to support him and not complain, he could endure his own hardships without complaining. Then a local bully pushed Hall down one day. He went ballistic, attacking the bully with all that he had endured over the years, which soon caused him to black out.
When he woke up, he was in a hospital bed feeling sick. Freyr was in the chair next to the bed extraordinarily upset. He found out that in his rage, he tripped down a flight of stairs. The other boy was hurt, but nothing fatal, whereas Hall almost broke his back. After this, Freyr changed. In order to pay off the medical bills, he converted to a Baptist church and received charity from the congregation. Hall was very confused by this, as he thought his brother had pride, and would not accept the handouts of others. Slowly, Hall started to distance himself from Freyr. He took on a part-time job as if to pay “rent” to his brother, who didn’t argue with the second source of income. He started practicing Stav by himself, and lifting weights at the local gym. He began to think that he was better than everyone else, and hanging out in a local gang. Soon, fighting was an everyday occurrence for him and he stole instead of having a job. His brother saw this, but could do nothing for fear of breaking their already weak relationship. Until the day Hall wanted to move out, so as to live with his “Real Brothers”.
Freyr screamed, “What the hell are you thinking? I have worked so hard to raise you into someone that our Parents and our Family could be proud of!”
“Our Parents?” hall yelled in retort, “Why do they matter at all? They sent us away because they didn’t want us! They refused to give us a real family, so I’ve made my own family, with my friends, my real brothers! I don’t need to care about what the people who absolutely hated me think! And neither should you!”
Freyer stood in disbelief. Had his brother really harbored all this anger without telling him? “They thought we were too weak to contribute to their family so they sent us away.” Hall muttered, “They never wanted us to be happy.”
“Stop it! Stop hating them! Don’t you understand? We weren’t sent away because they didn’t want us to be happy! They sent us away because it is the ONLY way we could ever be happy!”
“You call THIS happy?” Hall gestured to their meager apartment. “This is a shithole! I could of grown up in a house! With a family! A real family! A mom! A dad! That’s happiness!”
“They couldn’t afford to feed four mouths, let alone two, but instead of letting us starve, they sent us to live in a place where happiness can be achieved! They wanted us to make our own happiness!”
“Yea, but without them! They didn’t want us! They could have come with us.”
“No. they couldn’t have. They barely had enough money to send me. We had to hide you in a knapsack til we were already on the boat to Newfoundland. They had to send us.”
“They could have come later, after they made more money!”
“Not quite. Take a seat. I have something to show you.” Hall sat down in a chair and waited impatiently as Freyr pulled out some scraps of paper that were left to them by their uncle. “I didn’t show these to you because I didn’t think you need to know then. I guess that was dumb of me. Here.” He handed Hall a folded piece of paper. “It’s a letter from Mom and Dad. It was sent to uncle a year or two after we moved in with him” As hall read, he could hardly believe what was written. It was a letter to their uncle who had passed away. It seems that they had to sell the house soon after sending away their only sons so they could pay for food. Mother was ill, and Father was injured in a construction accident. They tried any means possible to get to America to live with their boys, but fate would not have it. Hardship after hardship befell the Parents. At the end of the letter, Mother was on her deathbed, and father had no way to make money, and was beginning to be sick as well. His last wish was to send this letter and let his sons know that he loved them dearly, and wishes them true happiness in their lives, and he believes that he made the right decision to send them away. The painfully slow death he was about to face is something he couldn’t bear to have his sons go through.
After reading the letter, 16 year old hall didn’t know how to feel. He was so confused, and felt like he had no way to sort out his emotions and thoughts. His brother told him that their uncle had left them a trunk full of their entire family lineage, back to the Vikings. “It always seems to help me clear my mind when I’m upset. Maybe it can help you too?” So he read. He learned every part of his family’s lineage, up to his mother and father. He learned about who they were from his brothers memories. He discovered that they were warriors, but as the need for them waned, they took up sculpting, and actually became quite renowned in Northern and Eastern Europe.
Two years later, Hall moved to California with his brother. They have a bigger apartment, Freyr has a better job, and life is starting to look better. Hall, trying to cope with his confusion, took up sculpting, and is also making it a point to document he and his brother’s journey in North America to keep the tradition going, and so maybe one day his children will know who he was before it’s too late. Though hall still has many psychological issues to deal with, he is getting better at accepting himself and others. He wants to be independent, but is starting to realize that everyone could use someone else.
