To get an avatar or signature, (Avatar is the pic to the left of this text, sig is the pic under) You go to your profile and hit modify profile.
In the avatar field you can put a direct link to the image you want to use, if you want to upload a pic from your comp I recommend tinypic.com , it uploads the pic and gives you a direct link.
For signature, in the signature field you put the image direct link, but you wrap it in BBC coding, i.e. this [img]URLOFIMAGE[/img]
