Simon was born in Seattle, USA. The only child of a doctor father and a psychiatrist mother. Simon displayed behaviour that concerned his parents from the day he was born. He was not like other babies. He was extremely unresponsive and would often cry unconsolably. It wasn't until he was three years old that he was diagnosed with a degenerative disease of the ear. By the time his tenth birthday arrived, Simon had lost almost all of his hearing. Though he could read lips, he and his parents learned sign language. Despite this added aid, the inability to hear during such an important developmental stage of his life caused him to become immensely introverted.
He made little effort to make friends at school or build relationships with others. Instead, he found solace in photography and painting, mediums independent of any auditory component. Swimming also became an important aspect of his life as it was treated as an escape from the world around him. Nevertheless, he still enjoyed music, or rather the vibrations of it. Resent or jealousy was not something inherent to him. On the other hand, the inability to escape the constant silence caused him great loneliness.
Tragically, loneliness would take on a new meaning after both his parents were killed in a traffic accident. Simon, who was only sixteen years old at the time, was sent to live with his aunt and uncle. Though they loved him dearly, they had difficulty supporting him on their pension alone. Realizing that he was a burden to them, he ran away from them.
