The sun....
It's beautiful....
the sky....
it's red...?
In the center of Death's Valley lay a man. Roth O'Roak. His body sunken into the sands of the vast California desert. His blood soiled the ground. No, not just his. The blood of another man as well. Roth's nemesis, Joshua Treborn. Roth wasn't sure if he had won or lost their fight, but he knew right now, he was dying. As the man watched the sky turn red he felt his life escape him with every last breath.
"Rita, Jesse. Mom, Dad. Taku, Conner, Marcus. Lynn, Aleece, Jayr. Take care...while I'm...gone."
The man known as Roth O'Roak closed his eyes for what he assumed to be the last time...
-------------------------------------------------
"3...2...1...Clear!"
"Doctor, he's not waking up!"
"Goddammit kid! I'm not letting you fucking die on me!"
Roth O'Roak lay in a bed in the middle of an emergency room. For the moment he was having what people have called an 'out of body experience'. His vision was fuzzy, but he could make out his body and a team of doctors trying to wake him up.
It seemed as if the doctors had been working on reviving him for some time. There was also a team of machines beeping like crazy, while another machine just made one loud high pitch noise. Roth as an outside watcher took pity on this team of doctors and nurses. It was time to give them a break.
"Fuck! 3...2..-"
"Doctor, stop, he's not coming back."
"...one more. 3...2...1...Clear!"
The zap of electricity entered Roth's body. It surged throughout his body and into his heart. At that moment the life swarmed back into Roth.
"Ahhhhhh!"
Roth lunged forward into a sitting position as he was revived back into the world of the living. His body shook with fear and the realization that he was alive and no longer in the deserts of Death Valley. The doctors and nurses shrieked with the sound of surprise and joy that their patient had returned to this world.
"Where...Where am I?"
Roth's entire body was a pale, pale white. His face was still in a look of fear and shock and his eyes were cold and lifeless. His once lush green iris' were now a cold white with a tint of green. He felt so cold. The warm desert and it's red sky were nothing like this cold, blue medical room.
"Rest. Rest first, we'll talk later."
As the doctor who saved Roth's life exited the room Roth laid back into the bed. The machines still beeped, but the high pitched whine was now gone. Still shaking Roth retracted into his bed for warmth. He tried to listen to the Doctor's advice, but for the next couple of hours Roth would lie there, restless.
--------------------------------------------------
Besides the endless shaking of Roth's body, he had remained motionless. The doctor had finally come back along with two nurses that were there when Roth was revived. Roth slowly began to sit back up. The nurses looked Roth up and down in amazement as the Doctor analyzed a few charts at the end of Roth's bed.
"Doc. What the fuck happened?"
The team looked back at each other unsure of what to say or who should speak. Finally the doctor came closer to Roth with the charts in his hand and at his side.
"Son. You were found in the middle of Death Valley. You and another man were found drenched in blood and covered in wounds near the location of a Toyota Supra that checked out to be yours.
You seemed to be dead, but two scientists were traversing the area recoding temperatures, or something. They saw your car, and then found you two. From Death Valley you were taken to a local hospital, then Med flighted here. The second boy was taken to a different hospital for...obvious reasons."
Damn straight it was an obvious reason. If not for those two scientists Roth and J.T. would most likely be dead. For all Roth knew J.T. was dead by now, or he could be out of his hospital as Roth and the Doctor spoke. It didn't matter right now.
"Kid, it's...it's impossible for you to be alive right now. You lost more blood than humanly possible judging from the pictures taken in Death Valley. I...I shocked you at least 12 or more times to no effect. Consider this a miracle, because thats the only way I can describe this."
Roth listened to the Doctor's story. Even the nurses tunned in since it seems they didn't know the full details of his rescue. Roth listened intently but in end could only come up with one question for what was going on. Why was he still alive. He was perfectly ready for himself to die there in Death Valley covered in blood under the red sky. What purpose did he honestly have left?
"Thanks doc. I think I'll rest now."
The shaking had finally stopped, and all at once Roth could feel his body wanting to shut down. He didn't even remember the Doctor and the nurses leaving the room before he went to sleep.
--------------------------------------------------
"Rothy-boy. Wakey Wakey, eggs and bacey."
The voice of Roth's mentor, employer, and master echoed throughout his sleeping head. It felt as if he had slept for days. In fact he had. Now Roth was being awoken by Esau. It was just like when Vetis had put Roth in this bed, except this time was different, somehow.
"Theres my boy. How did your tussle with J.T. go?"
Slowly Roth got himself into a sitting position. He looked around at his cold blue hospital room.
"I...I honestly don't know."
"Good. It's better you don't know anything that happened. You were in that desert for quite a few days."
Roth was getting his first good look at Esau for the first time. He was tall, lean, and a pale white. A pair glasses rested on his distinguished nose. As Roth took in Esau's appearance, he took in his words as well.
"Days? The doc said I was rescued by some scientists around 6 in the evening."
Esau turned back to Roth with a mixed emotion of annoyance and amusement.
"Did he now? Well Roth I want to tell you what really saved your life. The drug I've been giving you. I call it the Superbus Drug. That means Arrogant in Latin. Arrogant, as in the drug allows the user to escape death. It's arrogant to the laws of God and Mother Nature.
While you laid bleeding in the sand, the Superbus Drug was working inside of you. While you were loosing blood the drug was producing blood at a much faster pace. Unfortunately it has a rather nasty side-effect."
Now Roth was really listing. His brain was struggling to retain all this information. The drug had saved his life? Superbus Drug? Blood Production?
"What side-effects?"
Esau looked down at Roth with a smile. Without responding he began to check his surroundings before taking out a little black container. Inside the container was a syringe, and a vial the read out Superbus Drug in black sharpie.
"I'm glad you asked. The Superbus Drug does in fact save it's user from death by producing large amounts of blood from it's own chemical structure until it fully breaks down. The down side is that is increases the users heart rate 10 to 100 fold. Which is why you were probably shaking uncontrollably when you awoke.
But, Heres where the mathematics come in. The average human heart will beat approximately 2.5 billion times in ones life time. You've been given the Superbus Drug 2 times by me, and I'm not sure how many times by the Yakuza. With a rough estimate, you'll need a new heart in 5 years. 1, if the drug I'm administering now has to save you again."
Esau's syringe worked it's way into the blood stream of Roth through his left arm. Roth was mostly unaffected by the needle, but his mind had been blown by the facts that were given to him. 5 years to live, 1 if he would be on the brink of death again. He didn't know how to react besides just sitting there.
Oh! And one last thing before I go Roth. Your car was totaled in your fight. Since I can no longer trust you going off into places like Death Valley, I got you something different this time around. Parking Space C4.
---------------------------------------------------
Two days later and Roth was finally able to leave the hospital. Roth's mind tried not to focus on his death to come. Well perhaps not death if he could receive a new heart. It was a gruesome thought that Roth wanted no part in. For now he just wanted out of that depressing place and back into his life, however short it was.
Roth was now wearing a plain black T-shirt and a pair of fresh jeans. It felt good to be in fresh clothes. Marcus was around to make sure he got home okay. They drove back to the Jungle Cat in relative quiet. Marcus could just tell Roth had been through some fucked up shit. Roth wondered if Marcus was on Superbus as well.
"Hey man, I know you're probably going through some fucked up shit, but Esau got you a gift, as did fate."
Roth looked at Marcus with a curious look in his eye. He knew Esau had gotten him a new vehicle, but what present could 'fate' have possibly given to Roth?
"What the hell do you mean fate brought me a gift?"
"Haha! You'll see man."
The two men arrived back home at the Jungle Cat by about 4 o'clock. Wasn't too bad timing. Although Roth thought it was funny as he watched groups of people huddling in coats. It was 57 degrees out. Back in Boston thats considered nice.
Nonetheless Roth followed Marcus out back to where a nice black and gold street bike rested in the garage in place of the orange Toyota Supra. Roth appreciated the gift, be was still very curious about the gift from 'fate'.
Then he walked inside. On the main large purple couch was a friend. An old friend that had been rescued from the tyranny of the Pacific Ocean. Roth's greatest friend that was thought to be forever lost back in Chula Vista.
"Carlos!?"
