His lips are neither thick nor thin. His parents could not afford the orthodontic work he needed as a child, and so his mouth is filled with crooked teeth, some broken and chipped from fights. It wasn’t until Saul’s birth that they found the newborn had a unilateral complete cleft palate and lip, a consequence of Michelle smoking with Saul still in utero, it would appear. The twenty-somethings, reasonably unknowledgeable of the condition their son had been born with, gave him the name they had originally intended, entirely unaware of the problems he would be faced with later. At 2 months old, the infant was fitted with a palatal obturator, and at 3 months his cleft lift was repaired by a surgeon that was in the young couple’s budget. While the surgery was a success, Saul was left with scarring on his face from the surgeon not yet being up to date with the most current technology is minimizing scars. As he grew older, Saul underwent the rest of his necessary procedures including the repair of his hard and soft palate, jaw resetting and pharyngoplasty. By 18, Saul relied less on fighting skill and more on the intimidating vibe he gave off, having grown to a staggering 6’3” tall. He graduated class of 2006 and attended California State University San Marcos that fall.
