It was nighttime and Erik had gotten hungry. He had run out of food. It was getting harder to live in his old apartment. The abandoned buildings surround his apartment building were picked clean of usable fire wood and food. He would have to venture further out to get supplies.Better get to it. he thought to himself. No use sitting around here getting hungry.
He stood up and moved to his front door locking it from the inside. He did it out of habit more then anything else. He went to his bed room and stepped out onto the fire escape. It was a clear night with a slight cool breeze. He looked at the night sky and could swear he see every star in the universe. He made his way down to the second floor where the fire escape stopped. He jumped over the rail and landed on the ground in the alley doing a roll as he hit. He stood up and looked left and right to make sure no one was there. He made his way out of the alley. Maybe he would find a jacket or some clothes that fit him. The ones he had on were getting kind of ragged. He started to walk down the street passing by ruined buildings and destroyed convenience stores. No use going in those. He already knew they had nothing he needed. He came to the end of the block and decided he was going to keep going straight instead of the usual left he made.
Erik walked for about another 10 minutes before he started to see buildings that were in a little better has. He found one apartment building with the door unlocked and pushed it open. “Hello? Anyone in here?” he shouted into the building. He doubted anyone was in there but the shouting helped to scare any critters that might have decided to make this place home. He stepped into the lobby of the building and looked around. It must have been a nice place a one time. He could tell by the security desk near where the elevators where. Marble top and was looked like cherry wood. Should be some pretty nice stuff in here. He thought to himself. He made his way to the desk started to open draws. He sifted through the contents of the doors. Nothing of use. Moving over to the stair well he be can to climb. He made it to the second floor. He turned right and started to walk down the hall way. All the doors so far were locked. “No need to kick in any doors yet. Don’t want to wake the neighbors.” He heard what he thought was someone laughing. He immediately turned around looking for the source. Nothing was there as far as he could see. “Must be the solitude that is getting to me.” He turned back to where he was going and continued to check doors. About three quarters the way down the hall he found a door that was unlocked. He turned the handle and pushed it open just enough to stick his head in.
The apartment was a mess. “Worth a shot. Maybe the person was in such a rush that they forgot something worthwhile.” He started by going to the kitchen. He opened the first cupboard and saw a few cans of peas and corn and one can of chili. “Mmmmmm. That will be a treat.” He grabbed the cans and put them on the counter. He began to look around for something to carry the cans in. He saw an old reusable grocery bag. He pulled on the handles to make sure they were secure. He then put his foot in the bottom and applied pressure. The bag seemed to be in pretty good condition. He placed the cans in it and began to go threw more cupboards. He found one cupboard that had a few more cans in it but they seemed to have been damaged. He tossed them over his shoulder making a clanging sound when the hit the floor. He had given up on being quiet. He was fairly sure he was alone.
