The world spun.
Victor's eyes opened blearily to the morning sun pouring through the bus, and awaking him from his slumber.
The light wasn't so bright
his eyes adjusted quickly, compared to night on night of being under spotlights the suns comforting daylight was a soft caress back to the world of the living.
Hungry
Victor looked around for a moment, his signature white pea coat was balled up as a blanket against the window of the bus, he had sat down alone but found himself next to a gentlemen slightly older than him. of course it wasn't a girl, that would have just been too easy. Victor was okay with this though, his mind was far removed from his lustful nature at the moment, something about being on the road and getting whatever you want jaded a person, made them want a taste of reality
so hungry
the bus creaked on, it bounced softly over the paved roads. victor could have driven here, he had his own cars. he had wanted to rest though, and had grown slightly accustomed to being driven places, though he wished for the plush interior of his tour bus the dinky bench he sat on sufficed just the same.
The school.
it had been such a long time since Victor had seen the school. he had bailed out on a very important plan. was it the pressure? perhaps, or perhaps a desire to move on with life. That school was a cist on the armpit of humanity. he didn't belong there. not then. but now, now Victor was older, his tastes refined like his attitude. he grinned his big winning grin as he saw the sign:
LONG BEACH with the familiar 405 freeway sign underneath.
Victor sat up, drawing his pea coat on he flashed a friendly smile to the man who had sat next to him. the man, probably in his 30's wore a slightly frumpy brown suit, 3 piece with a olive green tie over a creamy white shirt. it looked like he wasn't exactly excited about where he was going but the man was still almost forced to draw a smile at the grinning, bright eyed young man who beamed at him.
Victor looked out the window, his eyes scanning the tall buildings of downtown, the outlaying suburb before him.
still hungry.
Soon he would see the school again, like a ghost, or maybe like an old friend, it would depend. he was going to apply to be a teacher, maybe try to make a difference teaching english and music. try to bring the kids up better than what had been available while he went to the school. the bus began to pull off the freeway, onto the surface streets. they were close.
Suddenly the bus stopped. "last exit, then we turn around." Victor looked at him, wondered if it had anything to do with that terrible thing.... Victor couldn't be sure what had happened, he was on tour in new york when the first missiles hit, he was out of new york by the time the missiles hit there. the act of terrorism had almost been completely lost on him except for the bombed out cities he was no growing to recognize as the new face of the world. he was amazed this bus worked, or even ran so far
Victors eyes stayed mostly straight ahead, though a few cocked their heads at the young man with his blonde faux hawk and white pea coat, looking like a model strutting the runway. he thought stars should be expected in long beach. a young girl ran up "OMG you're victor from the Apocolyptic Grin!" she cried out in fangirlish scream. he was rarely recognized everywhere, but every now and then there was a true fan who actually bought the CD and looked in the album jacket to see the picture of the band. fans like these where few and far between, Victor enjoyed them very much. "that's me" he responded, his smooth baritone alluding nicely into his smile. even in a time when buildings where destroyed, life was changin fundamentally, the fact that a girl and her love for music would still approach him... "can I have an autograph?" she asked, her own smile a fine thing against her tiny face, though she had big beautiful brown eyes. she was a little bigger than Victor would normally go for, but not fat, one might describe her as thick. suddenly she was rummaging through her purse for something for him to sign. "tell you what" Victor said with a little knowing smirk "I'm about to have lunch, why don't you join me and I'll autograph whatever you want". the girl looked like she was going to faint, the expression on her face simply froze in disbelief. she quickly composed herself though, accepting the offer with glee.
The two wandered into an abandoned panera bread, Victor made himself a bacon and turkey panini, and the girl (whose name he had found out was Sarah) a chicken salad. Victor cooked his food while she ate her salad. She gushed on in between small bites. "I love 'come a little closer' I feel like you were describing me!" Victor smiled politely, though whenever a girl said that to him it always unnerved him. was it because he didn't believe them? perhaps because if this girl is really like the girl he sings to in that song it means she's probably not in a good place in life... it made him want to help, the way he used to when he had written the song, but so many could only help themselves, and refused to. "and don't get me started on 'then!'" she almost shouted "then is still such a long time from now, I'm not too worried about it anyho-o-ow" she sung his song to him. she had a pleasent alto voice, it fit the song well. he grinned his winning smile. "that's flattering" he said - "for me to go asking before my time, there is no reason and there is no rhyme, there is no reason and there is no rhyme..." she continued the chorus and looked at him expectantly, there was no one around, this place was a ghost town. Victor slowly wondered if the school was still around at all...
"there is no reason, and there is no rhyme... this tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimme, this time" Victor sang, his smooth baritone stretching with ease into a tenor as he rounded the songs chorus out. Sarah laughed and clapped, almost like a child Victor observed. They met eyes.
and held that gaze for a moment.
it wasn't but a few more moments that they where back outside in the alleyway, on top of each other.
and time passed.
"That was great" Victor said.
"yeah"
her eyes burned into his for a moment
"you want a medal?"
she looked at him, and he at her. "I like your company, but I'm not really looking for a companion..." Victor said with a little laugh, an apologetic smile, she rolled her eyes "should have expected as much"she sighed. Victor legitimately felt bad, but he hadn't really promised her anything, she had just kind of thrown herself at him. "so where do you go now?" she asked him. "I heard you aren't doing music anymore" she finished. Victor's head whipped around. word had gotten out fast. he supposed everyone was going to know eventually, but now it almost seemed too soon. "I'm gonna teach at a school, 259, just down the way"
she stared at him for a moment
"you must of been gone for a while, there ain't no school down the way" she said.
"you're kidding"
"nope, I'll show you where it used to be if you want"
Victor was begining to tire of her company, but perhaps it was just that what she had said rubbed him the wrong way. he wanted the school to be there. needed the school to be there"show me" he finally said.
they walked down the block, Sarah tried a couple times to start a conversation about the little things around them, the lack of people since the crises, the loneliness, but the knot in Victor's stomach about the school being gone kept his mouth shut, his usually smiley demeanor a little more serious. it was in rare times like these you could actually see how bright victor was behind his pretty face, and the gears in his head were simply racing to conclusions without control.
Victor came upon the ground of 259. there was no school. there was no rubble, there was simply nothing. a lot of nothing. A vague wondering if people still passed by here ran through Victor's head. he looked back at Sarah. this was a change of plans, he wanted to be alone. he took out a notebook from inside his peacoat, signed his autograph, and even wrote his number. "I'll be in town for a while, so if you get bored..." he trailed off handing her the paper with a wink. she looked at him dubiously. "I'd like to be alone now" he said simply. she looked hurt for a moment, then looked down at the paper, and for a moment you could see that she felt his remorse, there was something about that school being gone that was really troubling to this guy. she decided to leave him alone and walked off, pushing the autograph into her purse. she would never call him.
Staring at the ground Victor couldn't help but feel wonder at how this could have happened, what had happened. he wondered if others ever still came here, if they were planning to build something new on top of the old ground. and mostly he wondered...
now what?
