Brillliant blue bandana secured over nose and mouth, Oki hummed softly as she pushed aside moveable rubble. It was heartbreaking the remainders of so good a place, dark amber eyes glimmered with moisture. Perhaps only to her, this was true. Paddle whistled as the wind blew in their favor, the last of the dust having passed a short while ago. Oki sighed and pulled her hair back. There was so much she was hoping for and so little she knew would be found.
She paced the area, gathering small plants, buts of metal and the like. The area had been picked over throughly, a variety of tagged and retagged stones told her of turf battles. She hopped onto a pile of rubble, arms out as it shifted below her feet. She laughed, the sound falling dead around her. This was no place for joy, was it?
Stepping to the ground, she plucked a small hairpin out of the dirt. The pin was simple with little stars hanging from it, cute and intended for a child. Perhaps her girl would like it, once it was cleaned up. Placing it in her bag a rattling sound caught her attention. Oki licked her lips, she'd upset someone. Turning, slowly bringing Paddle to hand, Oki found a dear and familiar friend. "Hello, Beautiful," she purred to the diamond snake.
It hissed, shaking it's rattle and shifting into a tight coil. Oki watched the creature- it wasn't playing around, she must have disturbed a nest or clutch. Rattlesnakes were such cranky animals. "She will leave in peace. Stay, Mother Diamond. Oki will not hurt her if she does not strike," the woman crooned, slowly beginning to lift her foot. The snake struck, as did the woman.
A thick, wet sound echoed as the beautiful animal met its end. Her stomach churned, heart broke- so beautiful a creature, so fragile. Oki lifted Paddle and winced- it looked like a water balloon gone wrong. The body twisted with weakened rattles, the throws of death were enchanting and lulling. She watched until the thrashing stopped, before pulling out gloves and a bottle.
She gathered the poison, extracting it with little difficulty and storing it away. Removing the head, she skinned the reptile and laced the meat and bone on thread. Laying the skin out to dry in the sun, Oki said a small prayed and continued on. Paddle complained he did not care for snake and she only laughed at him.
