Whatever happened changed Olesya...but not necessarily for the worst. She was better equipped now for survival, which Mitsuki only assumed was a great aid in protecting those she loved- especially this Maddie she kept speaking of, as if her mother.
Soft smile.
"Chicago."
Second time mentioning the place, though to be honest she wasn't sure where to start. Which disappearance does she explain? The ones from high school? Or maybe the one that permanently made her leave California?
"I got pregnant, graduated early, and left for Chicago with the intention of never going back."
This was the shorter version. She remembered a time when she was pregnant when all she felt was shame- being a teen mom was nothing to be proud of, but once she had Sierre... No regrets. She let out a small, inaudible sigh.
"Extenuating circumstances made it difficult for me to stay in California during the entire school year, which explains my frequent disappearances. After graduating early, I got my Bachelors in Molecular and Cellular Biology and was making my way through med school until Barker happened," a soft 'heh' escaped her as she nearly began to relive those memories.
...another relatively short version, BUT Mitsuki wasn't good at sharing her personal life plus not much was going on in her life while attending medical school. Her life was swamped by being a full time mother and student.
"Downtown Chicago is almost completely in ruins," she uttered, which made sense. All the tall buildings collapsed and hundreds of thousands of people were killed near instantly. She rubbed her thumb against the cool glass of water.
"My daughter was five."
Short pause.
"My older brother started a faction near instantly after the bombs fell within Chicago and I was a part of that group until...a couple weeks ago."

Pregnant? Olesya had never seen Mitsuki with a boyfriend, but then again the former School Captain has always been pretty private with her life. She seemed to do well for herself though, graduating early and taking responsibility and then going to college for some sort of crazy science thing? Les had already forgotten the fancy words as they left Mitsuki's mouth...they just sounded impressive. Maybe that had something to do with the whole medic thing.
"Downtown Chicago is almost completely in ruins,"
Olesya nodded, her mind wandering slightly. If Mitsuki had a daughter, where was she? It'd been what, seven years? Maybe she left her with a caretaker while she went our scouting or something, but Olesya was under the impression that Mitsuki was a lone wolf.
"My daughter was five."
Oh.
The white haired woman frowned, taking a sip of her lemonade to cover her awkwardness. The bombs took a lot of lives, destroyed a lot of families. Olesya's family was still missing, her parents and three siblings were nowhere to be found. Her old home and family business had collapsed, and there were no signs of anyone in the ruins.
She let a slight pause settle between the two of them, before voicing her next questions.
"What brings you here?"

Yeah, no one really saw her pregnant. She disappeared for nearly an entire year.
"California is on the way to Japan."
Just as Olesya had family missing, so did Suki. There were already confirmed deaths of her adoptive parents but the status of her biological mother and father were still unknown. It made sense why Mitsuki, rather than her older brother, would want to go and find out- the one she called 'oppa' or 'nii-san' wasn't her blood brother, and therefore not his parents.
Though just how long she would stay in California was still up in the air. She thought about residing here permanently after her return, but... Chicago was where Sierre was buried; it was where her brother and closest friends and comrades were. In a sense, a place where she belonged.
"I haven't heard from my parents, but... I just need to know."
Whether they were alive or dead. She needed to know.
"...what about your family?"
She remembered seeing her siblings back at the floral shop.

"I haven't heard from my parents, but... I just need to know."
The words echoed a chord from Olesya's mind down to her heat where it twanged painfully. I just need to know, I just need to know... The white haired woman frowned, casting her kaleidoscope eyes to the glass in her hands. She gripped the glass hard so her hands wouldn't shake.
"I...don't know."
Her voice had a slight roughness around the edges, trying to keep any sort of emotion at bay. Her tone was forcibly calm, even. She cleared her throat, taking a sip of her lemonade before speaking again, he voice much clearer.
"My...the house collapsed, along with the store. I couldn't find anything in the rubble. No sign, no anything. I left a note at the site, and check back when I can, but still nothing."
Her chest felt really tight, making it difficult to talk. Her words were slower, each one taking more effort than if she was talking about a normal subject like the weather or sports. When she opened her mouth to speak again, she was rather quiet, almost as if speaking to herself.
"I understand needing to know."

If Mitsuki were more open at showing facial expressions, she probably would have flinched upon hearing about the collapsed home - as it only served as a reminder of the collapsed school that made the body of her daughter unrecognizable - and then relief after hearing no signs of life. Olesya at least had the hope that her family was alive...but that blessing could very well easily be turned into a curse, especially after years and months of searching.
"So what's keeping you in California?"
Aside from the potential of her family being nearby? Might have seemed like a random question, but it was something that frequented her thoughts- almost everyone she knew from PHS #259 was still in the area; and she's even run into people that migrated to be in California.
Heck, even she returned- if only temporarily. Everyone had different reasons; what was hers?

Olesya let Mitsuki's question sit for a moment, lingering between them. She swirled her lemonade around in her glass before taking another sip, letting the tangy citrus sensation dance across her taste buds.
"I was originally brought back down here by Jon...'Unfettered.' I believe he wanted me to join the Crows, but I haven't seen much of him. Busy man, always was. About a year ago I stumbled upon an orphanage and reunited with a little girl I babysat back in high school. She's ten now, and the orphanage was in complete disrepair. I didn't really have a choice, I took her in."
Olesya didn't mention the three other little girls she'd resuced, and later had adopted out to childless families. She didn't mention how a family offered to take Maddie off her hands, and Olesya refused. Even Maddie didn't know that.
"When I was gone, David took care of her, and now we're like a little family. It's very unconventional, but it works. I have a purpose here, both as an officer and as a civilian guardian. That's why I've stayed."
