An escape..

The beach was a wonderful place to think, especially at dusk. The crashing waves, the cool sand, the pensive navy sky...it was no wonder that Chi found it the perfect escape from her fantastically superficial life. Walking along the waterline her bare feet made impressions in the wet sand as she went along, the hem of her white dress flitting about her knees in the gentle breeze. The girl's face was troubled, wide dark eyes directed at the ground in front of her, a small frown on her face.

She may have been here right now, but her mind was miles away, thinking back to earlier that day...her mother had disappeared into her vodka trance again, and Chi had been left to wait after her. Her brother was gone again, and her father wanted nothing to do with it. As far as he was concerned, she had dishonored him...Chi simply thought that he couldn't deal with it, or didn't want to, and she didn't blame him. But that didn't keep her from being angry all the same. A small sigh escaped the slender dark haired girl, her shoulders falling the slightest bit, and she continued to walk along the shore, relishing in her temporary escape where she could shed the layers of her faux self, and not have to be anything for anybody for at least a little while..

Aris was walking down the beach. He found he enjoyed the sounds. Something seemed to clash within him as the calmness of the waves were the opposite of his mind. But on the outside he looked quite calm and serious. Not like your casual psycho analyst maniac. But of course, one could never tell.

Another walk on the beach and he expected, like usual, to find no one there. But there was someone. There was someone walking towards him. He was slightly surprised by this. He had really not expected anyone. "What are the chances of that..." he said quietly. It really was an interesting thing.

He walked more erectly, more purposefully towards the girl standing not too far from him now. He reached the ten foot mark from her and he stood and looked at her and quietly, but meaningfully said more than asked, "Problems?"

Chi had been so lost in her thoughts that she barely noticed the approaching boy, at least until he spoke that is. She froze in her steps, chocolate hues glancing up, a surprised look on her face, almost like that of a deer in headlights. This faded though as the girl assumed her normal coquettish demeanor..putting back on the mask..she almost inwardly sighed.

"Hmm? Oh, nothing.."

She said, her voice light and almost musical, it seemed to float away on the wind as it reached the boys ears. She had never seen him before, and he looked about her age, maybe younger. Dark hues blinked at the boy, the only motion about her figure being the flitting of her dress about her knees and her long dark hair against porcelain shoulders, the rest of her frozen where she stood, as she looked at him.

He paused and gave her a quizzical look. "Is that so." he said as he plopped down right where he was. His feet and ankles where in the ocean and it was splashing against him. The cool wind and the ocean waves were calming, soothing. If this had been a different night they would have annoyed Aris. But he was feeling normal tonight.

He noticed something odd about this girl. He couldn't quite place it. It wasn't exactly odd, it was just something rarely seen. He squinted at her, but for the life of him couldn't find out. He decided to ignore it and he turned to the crescent moon. It shone lightly on the ground, much like her voice. They were both light and both seemed to float.

"So what are you doing out this late?" He asked while still facing the moon.

With a light exhale, somewhere between a simple breath and a sigh, Chi crumpled to the ground as well, her legs folded neatly under her, and her skirt floating to setlled about her in a wavy circle. Her eyes were watching the water that lapped a few inches from her skirtline. Why was she out late? Her mother ha fallen asleep, and probably wouldn't awake until the morning, or mid afternoon. Her father was locked up in his gym and her brother was somehwere in Japan. So where did that leave her? Here, that's where. It was something to do to keep her sanity.

"I come here sometimes...to think..."

She said slowly, thoughtfully, adressing the waves in front of her. Her gaze was pensive, and almost lonely. Normally she woul never show such vulnerability to another person, especially a stranger, but she was especially troubled tonight, and she frankly didn't care.

He nodded his head, but she probably didn't see it and he didn't really make noise. They were both looking forward. Her at the ocean, and him at the moon. But for some reason when you say something and the person next to you nods their head you always feel it. It is something inside you that just acknowledges their nod.

"Thinking's easier when their is something out there. Some sort of quiet force that increases consciousness." He decided that he had probably not made any sense so he slowly added, "Like the sea." In that same soft whispery voice.

Even if she han't noticed his inclined head motion, she could tell by the tone of his voice that he understood. She turned her head to look at him, dark brown tresses falling over her shoulders at the movement. Who exactly was this guy anyway? He seemed quite intelligent, or at least he sounded so. But that didn't mean she was going to just up and pour her entire heart out to him. Her conscious was spurred back into her normal train of thought, and her emotional wall rose around her, blocking her thoughts from appearing on her face.

"Yeah, I guess so.."

She replied, not giving him a notion whether she agreed or disagreed. She was surprised that she had even talked openly for as long as she did, what was she thinking? She pushed her troubled thoughts into their little niche in the back of her mind, right where she always put them, where no one could find them.

He smiled and looked at her. He even chuckled for a second as he looked into her eyes. "You seem to guess a lot for someone who seems quite sure of what they want." He pointed out to her in a matter of fact tone. He knew what he read on her face. He knew something startled her. He could see that she was unsure. Just about what he did not know.

"So what is it that has you so confused?" he asked, still looking towards her instead of the moon. "What is it, that even in a place where something pushes you to think, you keep yourself doubting?" He asked, his voice warm and friendly, and wise at the same time. That tone had tooken a long time to perfect, longer than most tones. Perhaps because this tone was the one that made people believe in him the most. But who really knew?

Chi looked about at him again, her look a bit sharper, as if curiously demanding. He seemed quite confident in his opinion of her, and here they'd only been talking for a minute, if that.

"How are you so sure that you know I'm sure of what I want?"

She asked curiously, echoing his confident tone. It wasnt even a question really, more like a challenge. Who was he to say what she knew? Exactly.

"Who's to say that I'm confused? And even if I was, I've no reason to trust you with my personal business.."

She said lightly, even offhandedly. She easily tuned out the soft, and supposely trusting note in his voice. She had learned not to trust anyone since she was very young, that was when her mask first began to form over her true personality. If no one could rach the inner her, then she wouln't get hurt, and that was exactly the way she liked it. And no one, not even this stranger could break that, try as he like.

Aris grinned mischeviously. This was turning out to be quite an interesting conversation. She turned out to be independent and she turned out to be able to stand up for herself. He even managed to laugh a little. He put on that same confident voice. "I'm sure... positive even. You could say that the chances of me being right are one thousand to one." He said with a light smile on his lips.

This was the fun part, "I'm sure because if I was wrong, you wouldn't be asking me this question. You would have denied it, but you didn't did you?" Aris said still smiling. "And I know your confused because before this little burst of self confidence you seemed to have trouble answering my questions without doubting yourself." Aris pointed out.

He was still being friendly, he was still acting more playful than wise, but as far as he knew he was right. And anyways, he liked this game of chance.

Chi had to smile at this, grin actually. He was quite confident in himself to think that he knew her. He thought he could read her like a book. Maybe she should pretend that he could. Chocolate eyes widened, lips parted slightly in a surprised 'oh', she gazed at him, mystified.

"Wow..you must really be a great judge of people..I can't believe you saw right through it, I mean...I do doubt myself quite a bit...because...because..."

Her voice broke, and she shuddered slightly, dark orbs brimming with tears. She looked back out at the water.

He paused. This was a tough call. Her eyes were tearing. And he doubted she was just a really good actor, but of course it was possible. He turned his attention back to her tearing form. "Well that wasn't a very good explanation now was it?" He said more than asked. But it was meant for her to answer.

Aris wasn't the soft type. He didn't really like to be 'compassionate'. "What makes you so unsure of your thoughts? What makes you come out here just to...." He paused and looked at the moon. "Well think." He said finally.

Well that wasn't a very good explanation now was it?

Of course it wasn't...but she wasn't about to tell him her life story, she didn't even know his name. With a small sniffle, she wiped her eyes with the back of a porcelain hand, and if he managed to look, he would notice her hand was dry.

"I'm unsure because...because...you see, there's these people... think they know me so well...and try to tell me who I am, and I can't tell them that they're wrong, so I...I..guess I just conform to their assumptions..."

She turned toward, the boy, grinning. Sure, it was a bit long in the set up, but she'd managed to pull it off all the same. No, she wasn't self doubting. No, she wasn't unsure of herself. She'd heard these things all the time, but she didn't hold it against this boy, he seemed to be trying to help, or at least sympathize in some good samaritan stranger kind of way..The grin softened into a smile as she looked at him, as if to show him she was kidding.

"Sorry, I get that all the time... "

She said with a shrug, her voice casual, but still containing that light musical quality.

As soon as Aris understood that she was joking, which was at about the time she said, 'These people... think they know me so well.' he began to laugh. It was pretty darn funny, and even though she managed to trick him into believing her, his beginning opinion of her didn't change. But a smile was now on his face and he was still chuckling.

"I got to hand it to you. That was good." He said, still grinning. Then when she added that she got that a lot he was still smiling, but in the lighter warmer way. "That's probably because you're little... ish. And your eyes." He said simply. Maybe only he got that impression from her. But he definitely imagined her an orphan who was unsure of herself. It was just... well just what his mind had thought up of at the time.

Then he smiled as he added, "And your voice. It's so...." He paused, looking for the right words. "I have the urge to use childish, young, light. But I think the word which would fit the best...." He paused again and then his eyes lit up along with that light bulb in his head. "It would have to be the word... Pure."

A curious look came over the girl's face when he began describing her. She couldn't tell what he meant by all it, was he lovestruck or something? Sheesh, he didnt even know her name. The corners of her mouth turned downward in a slight frown as he compared her to being childish along with the little comment. He had been on a roll before hitting that word, she was almost flattered. The smile returned gradually as he corrected himself.

"Ish..? I don't believe that's a word, much less an adjective..."

She said with a giggle, fixing him with her dark eyes. She leaned back on her hands in a kind of casual lounge, casting her gaze out at the water then back at him, curious look back in place.

"And what about my eyes?"

She asked curiously. He had simply said it as a statement, along with the 'ish' comment. Call it vanity, but she was curious about what he thought.
