In a world of myth and magic, there is a human-like race called Chengeringu. Their ancestors were fairies and elves, which are now extinct. The Chengeringu have a very unique and fascinating power; at the age of sixteen, they are called telepathically to their Waike, a creature in the form of an animal – even mythical ones such as harpies or unicorns – and are bonded to that creature for the rest of their lives, gaining abilities from them and fighting side by side.
Most Waikes take small forms like birds, snakes, canines or felines. Tigers and wolves are a common sight, most wielding strong elements. On rare occasions, a Chengeringu will bond with a larger Waike, such as a bear-like creature, an equine or even a gryphon.
And the rarest of all – dragons.
As lovely as all of that sounds, this world is anything but peace. In this barren land where cities are surrounded by impenetrable walls, the lives of the Chengeringu are lived through hard work and even harder fights. They battle each other daily, climbing the ranks to the top – the higher your rank, the better your life. Tamers are the best of the best. They are powerful, rich and undefeated. Most look down their noses at the Rookies or Slika; the underdogs. With powerful Waikes at their sides, servants at their beck and call, and money to waste, Tamers use those below them as stepping stones, keeping the gap between the Slika and themselves large and seemingly uncrossable. Many Slika live outside of the cities, and are often referred to as 'Wilds'. They rule the wilderness with their Waikes, but life outside a city is just as dangerous as inside.
It’s a cruel world. In order to survive, one must fight. And if you don’t…you die. Plain and simple. There are no rules. No government. No one to enforce the laws. Yet, a sort of order is kept, thanks to the Tamers. They keep crimes down and protect those with good businesses. However, if you’re a Slika and you have no job, no rank, in their eyes no life…
You’re on your own.
