Emily cracked open her book.
The satisfying crinkle of pages put her at east as she lay against the tree in front of the school, legs crossed, eye on the pages. She was still heavily bandaged from the battle the other day, but despite it she wore her Captains uniform and had already broken up a fight. Of course, she’d had to be rebandaged afterward for ripping some stitches but it was all in a days work. The book- titled ‘Moby Dick’, seemed old and weathered like it had been read every day for a hundred years. She liked those old tomes and knowing that someone might have grown up reading it and died with it in their possession, leaving her with the history to mark behind.
Bringing her eyes up, she eyed a couple of students who began to push and shove each other. Letting out a shrill whistle that got both of their attention, she shook her head slowly in a “No.” like fashion, and both backed away, giving promises to one another that this would be resolved after school, across the street.
Em went back to her book.
She didn’t care what they did in their own time- but on campus, her word was law.
Stupid kids....
She continued to read, listening for any other situation she might need to step into.
