This was it, the moment she'd been waiting for. All the training, all the studying, all the hope and sweat and sleepless nights. She'd come this far, the full extent of what her family wanted back home. To know herself and her abilities better, to learn how to use them, to be more than she had been when she'd arrived. She could finally prove it to them.
Them. The faces of the board judging her swam before her vision as Bailey swallowed with a suddenly dry throat. Her hands were damp with sweat, her grip on the metal escrima sticks tightening for a moment as a precaution before she forced herself to relax. How many times had she cornered herself away? But she had figured this out on her own, and wanted to show them what she had learned. No extra items, no partner to take the hits or do the attacks with her from behind. Just Bailey and her weapon.
A single volunteer had been included in her demonstration for the full extent of her demonstration, a name and face she didn't recognize and probably never would. Still, she offered the taller man a smile and a nod before taking another deep breath and facing him.
“Alright, we can start now.” The man attacked with a wooden dagger, as she'd first learned with her squadmate. She went through the now familiar motions as she was, striking at the upper arm to numb the arm and disarm them. It was simple enough.
With the next attack, she drew on her powers to enforce her strength. The webbing seemed to be spun from thin air, little strands of a web catching the light as it formed around her hands and arms. This time, she drew her stick forward to defend herself from another strike, stepping in after pushing her opponent's arm aside to strike again, then turned to the board.
“As you can see, I can amplify a person's potential by myself, if only for a short time. But there are other things, too.” She waved for the man to take position again, and the webbing grew brighter, more solid as she focused the raw energy of the world around her, letting it take form to boost her speed as soon as she felt it rise to the pique of its potential. Her speed increased even more than before as she struck the man and knocked the knife away, then stepped back. Farther back was a training dummy. Focusing on her attack this time, setting one of her sticks down to grab the shoulder of the dummy, squeezing it with the newfound ability she'd gotten after the scorpion ambush. The dummy cracked and splintered in her grasp, a hole left where her hand had been. Shifting her weight to the other foot, she continued.
“There are other potential uses, too. While we have no on injured here, I could theoretically apply a stronger on-field mend if needed..” She could feel the stick slide slightly in her hand as she forced her breathing to remain even, to focus on each face as she spoke. She wanted – no, she needed – to pass this test, to prove she had what it would take to be of use, both to Cabal and eventually back home. To take innovation to the next level.
And maybe, just maybe, prove it to herself, too. See what she could do with the dedication and training she didn't think that she had. For now, all she could do was wait for their judgment. If they didn't think she was ready to move forward, nothing else would count.
