He had felt something stirring within him for days now. Ever since that little game of tag with his current partner, the brash Miss Avice. He hadn't noticed it at first, not when it happened. It had been the next day when he went through his routine, probing the inner depths of his soul. Or at least what served to fill in for his soul. Power mostly at this point. The love and life that he felt were already dead and buried. He awoke each day fueled by spite and hatred. Bound by duty to dress and face what lay ahead. Obligated by his vows to see his mission through to the bitter end. It was when he was in his quiet place, reaching for the power that lay dormant within him that he felt it. A shimmer of something new, something different. Something that didn't belong.
Somehow she'd touched him, not physically, but something about her had connected with his Qi and embraced it, leaving something behind. He couldn't identify it at first, it would take more meditation and focus to probe his new energy and discover what secrets it contained, what he could grasp from it. He resolved that he would alter his routine and meditate again at night. Somehow it felt more appropriate to probe her Qi signature at night, He would likely never tell her that, but he believed she would find it amusing and would get a laugh out of it.
When his morning meditation was finished he proceeded to dress and groom himself. Cladding his body in the trappings of class and respectability like he had his armor back in the war. Taking the time to ensure his hair was perfect down to the last strand. Much like he took the time to plan out his attacks for his squadrons back in the war. Every hair in place like every soldier positioned just so. Life was a battle, it was before, during, and after the war. He had never known peace in his life, and he suspected he never would. He was the type that if he had ever stumbled on peace, true peace, that he'd find a way to fight and destroy it. It was in his nature, tamed as it may appear on the outside. He was a killer at heart, however, and he never felt more alive than when blood splattered against his face when his skin was ripped from the force of impact, and when bones were crunching under his foot.
The next part of his morning routine was to grab the Jade Dragon. An intricately carved little figurine of an Eastern-styled Dragon. Its green color was faded, and it was smooth in his hand, warm to the touch. Something from his old life, though it had never been meant for him. But the rightful owners of it were now dead, and he carried it with him as he would carry their bodies, their souls. As long as he kept it with him they would always be by his side. It was the only thing he could offer them, atonement for his failure toward them was impossible. He'd not ask for forgiveness even if it wasn't however. He deserved everything he was to endure for the rest of his life. He deserved to live a long life alone until he was old and frail. The only punishment that was suitable for him was to live, to be cursed to continue to wander this Earth. A vengeful specter that feasts on the blood and anguish of those that had ever wronged him and his. He could never rest while even one of them continued to draw breath. They were on borrowed time, even if they didn't know it.
That is what he channeled into the Dragon, his Qi flaring up as he channeled his hatred, his desire to kill into it. Pouring bloodlust and determination into the inert figure. He would feed the beast with his rage and thus his own thirst was quelled as he walked the campus of Cabal. Reading and watching the trainees go about their day. A helpful piece of advice here, and a philosophical question there. Moving between the students and interactions as the hours passed, interacting with many but connecting with none. None except the one that had somehow marked his spirit. He doubted she even knew how she had done it. Not yet at least. But it was interesting, and it reaffirmed his decision to help her harness the power inside of her. Once he had believed that he would be teaching his children his techniques and his secrets. Showing them how to reach beyond their mortality and to become something far beyond human. But that dream had been snatched away and left to rot like their small broken and battered bodies. Now all he had was a foul-mouthed cripple to pass on what he knew.
If he believed in God he'd say God was mocking him. If his wife had still been alive she'd have teased him, asking if he was afraid that cripple would be too much for him. Their eternal dance as each of them tried to get a rise out of the other. That too had been taken from him, and now he danced those same steps without a partner. The music warped and distorted in this changing world. But they were the dance steps he knew, and he was too stubborn to change the song. Not yet at least, not until his thirst had been slacked.
When night finally fell Eric made his way to the training field in silence. Making a beeline for one of the rocky outcroppings. He was going to delve into a new power, he wanted to be surrounded by his own power in case he encountered something that he was not expecting. Rather than taking a seat under a tree he'd lift a hand to the sky, ripping a slab of rock upward into the air. With a flash of motion, he'd leap up and kick off one of the outcroppings to land atop the floating rock where he would drop to sit cross-legged atop it. His mind easily slipping into the void as he maintained his hold over the rock. The power within him glowed brilliantly, with the warmth of the sun. But something streaked through it, a shadow being cast by his light. Her influence, or what she was able to impart. He delved into the power, letting it's warmth fuel him as he traveled along it's currents until he'd be able to reach the tendil of Qi that did not belong.
The moment of truth, he'd reach inward deeper through his power and grasp onto the tendril, shining the full force of his light upon it. He would force it to reveal itself and it's secrets to him. He would master this as he mastered everything in his life. Completely.
