Ayatlan is the center of knowledge on Qi and it's abilities in the known world. Researchers dedicate their life to discovering how best to use mana and shape their spells. Through secret techniques and closely guarded secrets the Mages of Ayatlan have discovered how to tailor their spells to do what they desire, rather than relying on it to evolve on it's own and take a natural shape, they cultivate their magic with methodical precision. Knowledgeable and specializing in spell and artifact crafting the Mages of Ayatlan are proficient in the usage of spell components from all sorts of esoteric materials.
All youths who show the natural affinity to become mages are sent to the Academy of Magic where they learn the secrets of spell craft. Starting as early as six years old, they construct their own spell books and begin the rigorous task of mastering magic. A feat that takes decades if not a lifetime to master their secrets. Those without magic are treated as a lower class. Pitied as a shameful mark on a noble house should one of their own be without mana, and seen as little more than a laborer if they are lower class. The city runs on a firm class system where rank is determined by pedigree and magical ability.
The Noble Houses make up the Council of Mages who advise the High Arch Magus. The Houses of Nobility are all officially seen as equal rank and standing, however it is not unheard of for a house to fall from favor out of nobility, and while rare, it is possible for a new house to rise up and claim a place. The houses of Nobility currently in power are the Salabim Family, The Pohocu Family, The Tadah Family, and the Sesameme Family. The current Arch Magus is the eldest living member of the Sesameme family.
