Melanie came to in the infirmary. It had been at least 6 hours since her “fight” with Matthew. It was dark outside the window. Nurse Joy sat slumped over her desk, lightly snoring. Man that chick was weird. I stretched and felt my leg give an involuntary jerk. Shit that really hurt. I winced at the pain and whimpered lightly. Nurse Joy stirred and looked around. Seeing me awake, she quickly got up and moved to my side.
“Hello, Dearie. Please try not to move your leg. It will cause some decent pain. I replaced the kneecap, but you did break your femur. That will take some time to heal. I couldn’t do it while you were sleeping. It will be quite painful. Are you ready?”
I didn’t make any sign I had heard a word she said. Although, she kept her gaze. She must have known I was processing.
“Uhm. Yes ma’am. I think I’m ready.”
“Alright, Dearie. Try not to move too much. It’s not going to be fun.”
She warned me, but I didn’t believe her. Honestly, I thought she was spewing shit, a fuckin looney. She lightly placed her hands over my thigh and concentrated, furrowing her brow. Her hands began to glow a dark red and I felt a warm tingly sensation. I was about to make a sarcastic comment when the warm sensation became hot like fire and the tingly sensation became stabbing serrated knifes. I threw myself back under her strong steady hands and let out a scream. I heard a loud pop and the fire burned like hot steel pouring over my leg. The serrated knives turned to twin chainsaws taking up and down my leg.
And then the pain stopped. Well, stopped isn’t quite right. It melted into a dull throbbing hot bath sensation. I turned to her and scowled.
“Fuck you, Nurse Joy.”
After that, I promptly turned into my side and threw up into the conveniently placed trash bin. Perhaps that was what it was for. Nurse Joy smiled at me and walked back to the desk, opened a drawer to retrieve something, and made her way back.
“Hold still a while longer, Dearie. Almost done.”
She gently pulled my leg straight and wrapped a splint over my thigh and a knee brace around my knee.
“You won’t be able to walk around on this for another few days, Dearie. But I’ll give you a pair of Krutches to use.”
I don’t know how much I was in and out of consciousness for. A few hours, several hours, a day? I had no idea. All I knew was Nurse Joy woke me up for pain meds and medication. I liked the pain meds. My leg began to heal and I didn’t have to feel it. It was nice. I had a lot of nightmares though. Mostly, I kept seeing Krane dying. I would see what was happening and try to run to him, but every time, I couldn’t make it. I was just too far away or just too slow.
“Krane!”
I sat ram rod straight in the bed. Nurse Joy nearly fell out of her chair. I mumbled an apology and laid back down.
